I thought it was more that they were going to merge Part 1 and 2 of Storm of Swords

Ah nightmare I really wanted to see the original pilot as an extra feature, all the other things I could take or leave . 
Book 1 had 2 big battles in but they bottled telling them for some reason which really ruined the first season for me

I'm guessing budget. Season two they are supposedly having a proper big battle though. Episode 9 I think.

I've read all of the books, but don't remember any significant fighting in Book 1. I am getting old though

I've not read the book but I'm guessing the fighting between 2,000 of Robb's men vs Tywin Lannister was one and the other when Robb went to capture Jaime with his remaining 18,000 men.
I'm still confused about "The Twins". What is the significance of this place? (Well I know that it is the only crossing point of the Triden river for x number of miles.) Why did Robb Stark need to cross the Trident in the first place?

I finished reading book one about 2 weeks ago , there was no large battles
it only talked about the aftermath
Nah it was so he could avoid Tywin Lannister's forces on the Green Fork blocking the Kingsroad - apart from the footmen he sent as a ruse. Robb needed The Twins so he could get to Riverrun and break the siege there, capturing Jamie Lannister in the process.
Apologies if this has been mentioned but I couldn't see it and it only emerged this week.
It's believed series 3 and 4 will be ordered shortly and will cover books 3a and 3b. Crew have been told to expect 9 months of filming next year covering both seasons back to back (as is the fashion these days).
Yeah, I thought Tywin was Whispering Wood, got my Lannisters confused.
