What film did you watch last night?

Fear & loathing in Las Vegas. 8/10.

Been a few years since i last watched it, & forgot how good it is.

Yesterday:

The Thing (new version) - enjoyed it

Hugo - Great 3D and visuals but was slowing moving at parts although is a good film to watch. Not what I expected and those thinking of taking kids - don't! They will get bored.

Today:

Trouble in store (was on TV)
Fantastic classic film with Norman Wisdom.

Warrior - 8/10 Although cast from the Rocky mold it's a much better film than that label gives it. Emotionally charged scenes work very well and for 99% of the time all the characters seem genuine and the fight scenes are convincingly brutal. My only criticism is that while he plays the part fantastically well I just don't believe that Joel Edgerton looks physically capable enough to be in the ring (he's a toned Joe Average who uses locks instead of knockouts) compared to say Tom Hardy who looks exactly right. That however could just be down to my own lack of MMA knowledge, the Middle-weight group could be filled with people like that.

Hugo 8.5/10 - Great film and great perfomances from all actors especially Asa Butterfield and Chloë Grace Moretz. Visuals and atmosphere is amazing.

The Dilemma

Watched this last night on Sky Movies and I actually quite enjoyed it, pretty much what you expect from Vince Vaughn in terms of character and it was worth the watch.

6/10

Black Hawk Down

9/10
Brilliant war film, it's got a bit of everything in it.

Always pees me off slightly that this movie gets so many plaudits. This IMDB Reviewer sums it up perfectly for me:

An unashamed propaganda piece

I read Bowden's book by the same title. All of those who claim that this movie follows the book closely clearly lack in reading comprehension. The book took a balanced approach to the conflict. We learn about the events leading up to the Battle of Mogadishu. Bowden interviews both Somalis and US soldiers and we learn about their motivations.

In the Scott's work all of the characters are flat. They're cookie-cutter "American heroes" who are completely indistinguishable from one another. The Somalis are depicted as crazed hordes who are inexplicably hell-bent on US blood.

I could go on, but the opening "background" text says enough. It suggests that US soldiers were merely there on a humanitarian mission to rescue the population from a genocidal warlord. What they don't tell you is that shortly before the events in BHD, the Habr Gedir clan elders had met to discuss the peace proposal put forth by Admiral Howe the previous day. Due to lack of intelligence Cobra helicopters armed with TOW missiles attacked massacred 54 people. With this act they succeeded in making enemies of the entire Somali people. Note that military advisers were with the film crew and able to veto every decision.

Read Bowden's book or google the Battle of Mogadishu for more. Propaganda that is thinly dressed as entertainment gets 0 stars from me. The only difference between this and old Soviet propaganda is production value.

So basically the standardised propaganda bs, but dressed up as something else. In other words (and imo)...crap.

EDIT: The only good thing about the movie is Rachid Taha's introductory song - "Barra Barra" - later used to great effect in the Far Cry 2 Trailer.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes - I actually liked it quite a lot. 7/10

I'm glad they didn't go with the whole "a bunch of apes wiped out humanity" which some people were struggling with when the film was announced.

Hall Pass - Exactly what I expected from it. A couple of genuine laughs, but fits in quite well with the average fare the Farrelly Brothers have been serving up recently. 5/10

Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: Part II - Enjoyed it. I thought that as a large series finale, it seemed to sum everything up quite well and tied off the loose ends. I also felt that it justified sitting through almost a decade of the series, whereas a lot of final episode/films can sometimes miss the point or leave too many things unanswered. I felt the previous two films were a bit lacklustre, so this one ended everything on a high note. 7.5/10
