It's harsh on Ronaldo and Messi having to win the WC to be regarded as the best or one of...Maradona, Pele etc had great players around them, these two guys don't for their national teams, they shouldn't be discriminated for this. Their individual attributes should be assessed, not their team merits.
This is true. However, Maradona's personal performance in '86 was superior to anything Messi has managed to do in a World Cup.
I don't doubt that he could though. If you can do it in the Champions League you can do it in a World Cup. He just hasn't yet. I think a lot has to do with how he is mentally prepared and motivated by Barcelona, and I bet half of that goes out of the window with Argentina.
I know he hasn't been fantastic for Argentina but he has still scored or created 39 goals in 66 games (19 goals, 20 assists) so he isn't a complete flop. He came up against the team of the tournament who were in amazing form at the time at the World Cup and if they came up against Paraguay or even Spain in the quarter final they would have gotten through in my opinion. I think he'll shine at the next world cup personally.
Messi has (or could have) Tevez, Aguero, Higuain, Di Maria, Pastore, Aimar, Saviola etc in close proximity to him, in terms of attacking talent I'd say there are very few teams in the world that can compete with Argentina for firepower.

I really don't get why people automatically assume it SHOULD be Messi. I think it will be, as he's simply better liked than Ronaldo.
But Ronaldo outscored him, broke scoring records all over the place in a significantly worse team than Messi(for most of the past year anyway).
They are both fantastic players but, in terms of personal records Ronaldo has done more in the past year, in terms of the teams they play in Barca did much better, but it seems odd to punish Ronaldo for not being a Barca player or gift it to Messi for being a Barca player.
They've both had brilliant seasons but, hell I can't even remember what Ronaldo did, the all time Real league record, the all time league record full stop, the Real all competitions scorer, the european golden boot?

The same is true for....... who exactly, Messi, he plays Real twice a year, and the same dross, yet he hasn't broken the all time league scoring record, he hasn't won the euro golden boot in his second league, and with a better team, still playing the same other 18 teams that Ronaldo played...... he didn't do as well?
Ronaldo played in 1 more league game, Messi played in one more UCL game. They both got 7 goals in the Spanish cup though Ronaldo played one more game in it.
