****The Official Samsung Galaxy S II Thread***

yes, this stupid silent icon didnt even exist until 2.3.5

Ah it was Silent Vibration Icon. It actually hides the vibration icon but keeps the silent icon. Now, if you have vibration only when silent enabled then that makes sense, if not then it still makes sense having just the silent icon.

Can anyone point me in the direction of an up to date debrand/root/custom / guide . The phone is three branded on 2.3.5 . Windows is ok but I will have your babies if you can show me how to do it from a Mac

Can someone please spec me a nice new ROM to help improve performance and battery life?Should i just wait out for ice cream sand which?
I have been using lightning ROM for the last few months hoping for the developer to keep providing support and updates but not heard anything about it being updated anymore :(

Just stay with a stock Samsung ROM with SpeedMod kernel; Samsung have done a fantastic job with the software on the phone.

These "developers" are only taking the Samsung firmware, de-odexing it, adding edited system .apk files from various sources, including some amateur looking theme and shell scripts that don't really achieve anything.

The only true developers for Android are those who make changes to source from the Android source git repository, or like Hardcore; make changes to the kernel tar balls provided by Samsung.

Hardcore really know's what he's doing, he merges more up to date kernel drivers from the Galaxy Note into that of the Galaxy SII and applies latest ARM patches into the kernel.

Stock does not give the additonal features such as kitchenpro of checkrom or the jkay settings support - To get the absolute fullest out of a ROM, should you want to, then you should be running a custom ROM.

Now if that means a ROM has bits pasted in from other sources to make it better than excellent, that by no means makes it "amateur", nor do they look as such (I'm referring to roms like check and the guys who created the ICS theme for S2 ROMs which looks and functions brilliantly).

JKay settings can be applied to a stock ROM if he provides the odexed files, otherwise it could be applied to a deodexed stock ROM. I know he has provided odex files for most firmware releases. Either way, these “ROM developers“ will have to base their firmware on the versions that he supports, if they want to use his modifications.

The kitchen simply checks a ROMs build.prop and passes files to CWM recovery to flash.

It's entirely possible to use the kitchen if you're running the same firmware their ROM is based on, unless they edit the build.prop in which case someone can just edit theirs to match.

No need to get defensive over CheckROM, but you can't deny that some of these developers implement features that do not offer any real use benefits; such as mounting directories with different flags/loop mounting.

I don't bother looking into those features as they don't apply to me, the stuff that does apply to myself (and many others here) has already been talked about and continues tas such as above^

Also, you can't just apply the ICS theme to a stock ROM either, I tried and it would boot loop, it has to be built for that specific ROM so unless you modify it yourself then you just have to use another theme or stick to stock.

Updated to CheckROM 4 with no problems, didn't need to restore anything. Installed it via KitchenPro, no wipe version. All I had to do was get ICS theme again it was the same as I had it before :p

Seems almost the same, in terms of performance etc. Some new icons etc. The browser that came with it seems good. Also I didn't know about the JKay Deluxe I froze that before :p I've now turned on the CRT screen off effect, looks awesome.

I managed to get rid of the other boot animation by finding the bootanimation.zip with Root Browser and deleting it. I now I have the Bios 2.3.5 one installed via KitchenPro, although it's still showing the Revolution one as installed on SD card.

I'm going to try SpeedMod kernal I think. Which one are you using with it mrk?

My dad's looking to get this phone, what's the cheapest place to get it now on a 18 month contract on either tmobile or o2.

Cheapest i've found so far is £30 with 600mins, 500 text and internet. But that's what i got mine for about 6 or 7 months ago. Thought they'd be cheaper now, especially with the nexus out now.

Hmmm, I was expecting an ICS ROM to be sorted by now but that has stalled. So I'm still using an old version of Batista... time for a new ROM but none really grab my attention.

This thing is QUICK at 1.6ghz!!

The benchmarks **** on everything else. Sorry I couldn't resist trying!:D

Which kernel and settings in SetCPU are you using? And is it stable :p

Edit*

NM, I don't really need any OCing. I've installed SpeedMod kernel K18 test3. Is very nice. One thing I like about speedmod is the lower screen brightness when low brightness values are being used, makes for reading text on white BGs way way easier in the dark in bed and also helps battery.

Try CheckROM 4 with the ICS theme (installed via KitchenPro). Looks fantastic. Although my opinion is biased because I haven't tried any other custom rom :p

Gone back to CFRoot kernel (v5).

I lost 15% battery in 44 minutes by just doing the things I normally do at lunch, play some games for 10mins and watch a few youtube vids. Never get such a drop on CFRoot. I thought speedmod was supposed to increase battery life not decrease!

Prepared for kernel change too by doing the cache wipes and calibrating battery @ 100%.

CFRoot also fully works with the additional features of CWM Manager so you can name your backups before it backs up whereas with all other kernels you must go into CWM recovery, backup then boot back into Android and name the backup folder using file manager.

Hmm not 100% sure but I think speedmod is decreasing my battery life too. 45% after 4hr10m :p

Have you tried any of the tweaks/mods in KitchenPro? I was interested in the Batista Engine one or something, but have no idea what it does :D

You mean Bravia engine :p

I have a few tweaks such as the camera 48KHz etc but not Bravia, it only improves IQ slightly when watching videos or looking at images without affecting battery life though so maybe I will give it a go. It's supposed to improve saturation of colours and sharpness of video etc.
