i5 2500k probable issue?

erm, well, it's just booted into windows fine and hasn't crashed yet...

and this is with the cpu overclock effective.

?

As in you haven't done anything yet and it seems to be OK?

If so, it's probably only a matter of time util it does - unless you've updates or removed something?

the only thing i've updated are the chipset drivers and they failed on the first go.

i'm just baffled.

the latter.

What, if any, changes have you made since - and how many times have you booted into 'normal' windows since the chipset update?

(The first reboot doesn't necessary count as it will have made changes on start up - sometimes a second boot is required to ascertain the stability)

only once then. this would be the second normal boot into windows since the chipset update.

still no problems yet. could that have honestly been the source of the problem?

ok will do! thanks for your help, mate, and thanks to everyone else who actually took their own time to help me :)

i heart overclockers forums.

although now i can't change my RAM frequency frrom 1333mhz to 1600mhz

Are you in the BIOS or trying to change it with a windows tool.

If it's the latter go to the BIOS.

Also, for now, i would leave everything as it is - and test. If you establish it's stable then begin to adjust settings incrementally to help identify a possible cause if things become unstable again.

nah, in the bios. can't access the option :/

ok, i'll leave it for a few days. sure it's not going to make a MASSIVE problem.

why wouldn't it let me alter the frequency anyway? :(

To set the memory manually:

  • Disable XMP
  • Set DRAM Timing Mode - Link
  • Then enter the DRAM timing config/mode to set the timings
  • And you should then be able to set the voltage/frequncies in the required fields.

What BIOS are you using?

cheers mate.

1.9. there's a new version available. is it worth updating or am i just asking for trouble? :)

Were you still having stability problems i would have definitely suggested the flash - but for now i would leave well alone.

If you do start to get stability issues again then a flash would be a logocal step as a lot of the recent updates are improved HW compatibility.

how do i disable xmp? :D

In the BIOS - 'Extreme Memory Profile' - set to disable.

Or alternatively set it to 'enable' as it will set your memory settings (frequency, timings, command rate and voltage) for you automatically.

Given your BIOS experience the latter may be the safest option for now until your sure you're system is stable.
