****The Official Samsung Galaxy S II Thread***

I'm using CheckROM with ICS Theme and Siyah Kernel, and have the extended 2000mAh battery... before my battery used to be <20% by the time I got home from work (6am to 7pm) and now it is >60%. I have undervolted and underclocked my CPU (max speed is 800Mhz) and it does wonders to the battery life.

I'm resisting the urge to do exactly this. I've come close to installing a proper custom ROM on several times now, but stock is working so well I'm afraid that I'll introduce issues, and once I start tweaking it's hard to settle on something for long. If it aint broke....

Still, I will update when ICS is properly here. Just still so impressed with how stable and fast this phone is!

Interesting, just been playing with mine at 800MHz and a little UV (25mV less on each MHz) and the performance seems to be the same as at 1.2GHz. How this will change video playback of Flash etc I don't know but will keep an eye on it. I imagine it won't be any different due to hardware acceleration though.

You are right in that it does take a lot of tweaking and testing to get to something you like, but once you have it it is worth it. Obviously making nandroid backups before you try something new helps in case it makes your phone worse.

I don't tend to play flash, but 800MHz seems fine to me with browsing, playing games and watching videos. I tested the two speeds on a friend and asked him which video I played him was at 800MHz and which was at 1.2GHz... he guessed wrong, lol.

May be missing something completely obvious, but how do I disable 2g? I'm in Cairo and don't want to be roaming..

You mean data connectivity? Settings > Wireless and network > Mobile networks > Untick Data roaming AND/OR Untick Use packet data

:)

I woke up this morning to find this displayed on the screen

"warning a custom os can cause critical problems in phone and installed applications if you want to download a custom OS press the volume up key otherwise press the volume down key to cancel"

Any ideas why this has happened anyone???????

I've just picked a black GS2 up and first impressions are great much nicer than my previous WP7 and my first android phone. After a quick look through this thread though i'm liking the look of all the custom theme options but need a bit of help with it all.

Do I need to root my phone to get the most out of it?

What's the best way to root it?

Are there any dangers to rooting?

Thanks to anyone that can help!

That's the odin screen, you get it when you hold down the power button, volume down and the home button.

king85, you almost certainly don't require root.

.

That's strange then as I didn't press any of those buttons

well i have pressed the volume up key and it says it's downloading, what harm can it do? I'll just re flash if it messes it up?

It says custom binary download :yes (2 counts)
current binary : samsung official

I've had my S2 for 4 days now and i'm impressed with it. However, i am an android noob, so i'm after some advice on it. I'm not going through 176 pages on here to find my answers so i'll just ask. First, a basic guide to Android and what i can do with it would be a start. Secondly, what is 'rooting'? Next, what essential apps should i be getting? and finally for now. I just tried Kies Air, connected my pc to my phone and it wouldn't load the page on my PC, just a blank grey screen. What exactly is Kies air?

Thanks

Im also new, but kies air just lets you view and add/edit things on your phone via your browser! Did you get the prompt to allow the computer to connect with the phone?

Kies air is wireless, you don't need to plug your phone in. You load up the Kies air app and go to the IP address on your PC, it's usually your routers gateway address on port 8080 iirc.

Rooting is like having admin rights, it's uneccessary for most users and only used for tweaking system files like battery icons etc. You also need root access to change things like cpu frequency and voltage settings.

just tried ICS launcher. how do i set the number of home screens from 5 to 1?

i wonder how ICS official will be on the sgs2, the 3 soft keys will be pointless.

Yes i got that, and the confirmation that it was connected on my phone, but on the pc it wasn't loading. I've tried again and now it is. My next question, how do i upload music albums? Trying the obvious - browsing audio and upload, then highlighting what i want but nothing seems to be happening?

I won't have them.

And my USB cable will not transfer data from my SGS2 anymore. SGS2 doesn't even say its connected, only charges, doesn't ask to make it able to transfer data, wanted to put the checkROM on it too :(
