Am I being 'tight' not wanting to share my broadband with a mate?

Lol, this guy isn't a lodger he is just living in the same block of flats as the OP so he should pay for his own broadband.

Share it = yes
For Free = no
Charge £6 a month for a throttled bandwidth of 20% of your line speed (£30pm divide by 5 = the 20% at £6 per month)
If he does not pay one month just change the Security Key or Ban his traffic.

Simples

I did this in a flat i lived in once I ended up making money on it too :-) block of 6 flats I lived in the middle paid £50pm for 50Mb Virgin Broadband TV & Phone.....
One guy say my Wireless and asked if he could use it I give you a tenner he said ok took the tenner and gave him my key and said it will expire at the end of the month he did this for 3 months on the trot when the other flat residents asked for the same deal.

So I setup my Awsome router (not the Virgin one) to dish out 6 SSID's
Flat 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6 I throttled mine Flat 3 to have 70% of the line speed and i split the remaining 30% between the other 5 so about 15Mb between 5 so they had about 3mb each they each paid me £10 a month so the £50 i was paying they was coverd I loved this arrangement not one of them complained about speed issues at all :-)

I made money when I got an offer off Virgin to reduce my monthly cost I got it for half price for 6 months so I made £25 per month for the 6 months so i made £150 and i got free TV, Broadband & Phone Line Happy Days
When i moved out they was all gutted me too as it was a good deal for me and they all loved the idea

I can't believe people are suggesting to give up part of your internet connection to an ex friend you haven't bothered with in a long time.

I don't particuarly care for their circumstances either, they're not a close or even a friend at all, the OP said an old friend.

Even going halfs is out of the question, because if he downloads non stop who are you to tell him to stop? He would be paying.

Let's not even get into the legal issues should he download movies, games and music illegally, as I'm sure OP you know you'll be the one responsible as it's registered to you.

edit: the person in question has his mums sky number to stream tv? It gets better. Does he even pay rent or is it that his brothers place?

Not to mention OP will have to buy a QoS router just to share it.

AND, let's remind the community that lowrider doesn't have a great income himself and has had numerous problems in his last place, the last thing he (or I) would want is crap like this.

personally yes, I have given the flat next door my wi fi code to save them having to fork out for their own BB because they only use it for casual browsing, they know the deal, no downloading or heavy useage stuff like I player/streaming, I cant say I've noticed much of a difference, (only an 8mb connection) and I never go over 60gb a month.

If you're worried about him using lots of bandwidth, you could tell him you're internet is limited to a certain gb a month? and if you feel hes taking priviliages/overusing tell him that hes using too much or that its gone over the limit and you have been charged extra because of his useage.

Charge him £10 a month and still use QOS.

If he does have access tho and he downloads anything dodgy then it may come back to haunt you, you need to think if its worth the hassle.

until they look at the O.P's pc and realise its not on there, go round and check the neighbours pc and find it on there instead.

can you not also read the mac address that was connected/downloading said dodgy items from the router?

Not being "tight" in my opinion. He needs to pay a bit if he wants some of the action :p

Other idea is to let him have a code but throttle his wifi connection to 2Mb Download max...

Can i have free internets please, my father is dead and i like to spend my moneys on 'smoke'.
Thank you, John at flat 4.

:D

True story.

Lowrider...

Are you signing up to BT? If so, how about enabling BT FON on your router? He can then purchase access to the hotspot without causing you any hassle.

IMO you should charge £10 a month, use QoS and block every dodgy site you can think of.

I'd never expect a friend just to give me free stuff.
