Hardly brave, more foolish!
I played against a team last night, and the guy thought he was sliced bread.
Played 3 4 1 2. With Higuan, Messi up top, Benzema just behind. Di Maria, Alonso, Masch, Villa, Pique, Puyol, Pepe and Casillas.
He started off, Messi scored one of the ******** goals that he usually scores, celebrated it like an absolute git (arms flailing, watching all the replays, the whole shhhhhhhhh celebration, running around like a loon etc).
I lost my rag and mauled the little *****. I think that was his last shot on target!!! Watched ever replay, celebrated until the last moments, massively tramped it up.
AND IT FELT AMAZING.
3 at the back doesn't work if you come up against a team with two decent quick wingers, as you get exploited down the flanks if your wingers don't track back (Di Maria and Villa aren't defensively minded). This then either leaves your CM's coming out wide to try and stop or worse, your CB's. Either way you're being exposed to giant holes in your back 3, or middle 4. Which good players will be able to exploit.
With 3 at the back you should be able to score goals though!
I know what you mean, but I find I play much more consistently and better than any 4-defender formation I've tried.
The first thing is that it's just a helluva lot of fun!

Because I have so much attacking power, out wide and in the middle, I score all kinds of goals, all different ways and the build up play is very enjoyable.
It requires a lot more work defensively - I have to be 'on the ball', so to speak, at all times, I can't just tackle in and hope my full-back will cover me, but I always have players back to respond to threats.
I play a high line and often trap the other player in their half, my defenders snubbing out any attack - lots of pressure and aggression. When I go fully defensive, my two CMs stay back and my wingers don't probe forward. That still leaves essentially 3 forwards to plough balls up the field.
My CMs are completely support, sure they venture up for a shot now and again, but they move the ball well between themselves and out towards the wings, and my defenders don't go forward unless I tell them to and sometimes they don't even do that!
Of course it's not perfect, no formation is, and yes, wing-play is the most difficult obstacle, but I've played 433, 4321, etc with fast wingers and managed to cover.
I pretty much concede at least one goal a game, but on average I score between 3-7 of my own.
I played with it last year and it was by far the most fun, and most success I've had in UT. Of course, it's not for everyone, but I enjoy that extra forward player, and I like having wingers too as well as two Strikers.
I've only had any real issues once and that was against 5212, but then I've always struggled to break down teams with basically 7 defenders.
It's not a formation you can just jump into like 4312, or 433, it requires a lot of work, a lot of tweaking and the right players (for you). I have a Brazilillian setup with the same kinds of players and it works lovely (they're my reserves, but play almost as well).
