It's the f-stop for Kodak!

Also interesting that they mentioned the hard time all digital camera makers are having.
I thought since reading the 4s's camera review that the iphone 4s and the like will destroy the compact market, only the Niche larger sensor cam's have a chance imo, at least for a while.
Leica should think about sticking a phone in it's compacts before it's too late.

but will they? I don't rate the 4s camera that much, we have a Fuji F45FD which is 3 years old and it is light years ahead of camera phones in soooo many ways!

The issue is there are so many punters who will have a camera phone and be happy with it. They wont be able to see why they need to 2 devices for 1 job.

My Galaxy S2 takes reasonable photos and people say "wow there clear etc". To me the pictures are ok but its not what im looking for. However when I bring out my 7D and take the same picture it opens peoples eyes on how much better and sharper the image is.

The famous last words of a Kodak executive...

Anyway if the below trend continues are think the easy answer is, yes they will!

"Fittingly enough, as Kodak is said to be pursuing Chapter 11, the digital camera business appears to be suffering the same fate as film: Sales of such cameras fell 17% last year, according to NPD, as consumers found the cameras in their smartphones made a standalone camera unnecessary."

Also posted before but in case you haven't seen this comparison check the below review. Also interesting just how good video is on the 4s on such a tiny sensor compared to a 5DmkII.

Also maybe it's just me, but current P&S's with their gazillion mega pixels and tiny sensors actually seem worse or no better than P&S's I remember that are a few years old.

That's due to the ridiculous megapixel wars. And yes, some upgdraded models actually take worse pictures than the ones they have replaced.

Oh and as for the article I just have to quote this

For snapshot purposes, the iPhone 4S is comparable to the 8MP Canon 20D when it comes to image quality

'sigh'

exactly...but Canon and a few others have noticed this and are taking steps that way. People will always buy p&s and compacts....the manufacturers who produce decent products at the right cost will survive. Kodak is the Nokia of cameras...too slow to react with products people don't really want.

Traditional point and shoots with tiny sensors won't last long imo, the market as a whole struggles to churn little if any profit.
The people still using point and shoot's now probably won't next time they upgrade their phone...

With hindsight, what a brilliant move by optics companies such as Carl Zeiss to get their lenses used on so many devices that arent for photographers (webcams, phones, etc). You piggy back on a product that is another company's success and thats your success. I've always seen kodak trying to make their own thing work and failing instead, when all they would have had to do is partner with one of the current success stories when they still had the clout.

My 4s has replaced the need to worry about taking a camera at all to most places when out with the family, the quality is more then good enough in typical* conditions, and it saves having to lug my DSLR around unless i want to take an extra nice image.
Was actually considering a good compact for this, but tbh the 4s isn't far enough behind to make it worth while.

On the flip-side though, you have to look at how much the manufacturers are currently pushing Photography, rather than high mega pixel point and shoot cameras like they used to. They are all trying their hardest to market micro 3/4 cameras and similar, such as Panasonic, Olympus and Nikon with their new range. They are really trying hard to market how it can work for you as a Photographer and take great images.

Also as I think we mentioned in another recent thread, have you been anywhere touristy lately where people are likely to have their cameras out? So many people have DSLRs now, as they can be had cheaply at entry level or second hand. Everyone wants to take good pictures, which is why you see them so much, when they used to be much rarer.

interestingly, with a 2 bodies and several lenses, i want a mirrorless optino like the Sony NEX5 system for traveling. especially as now i have my daughter and she needs to be kept entertained rather than wating for me to get that perfect shot.

Yup thats what they should have done, used their brand name to build a discrete unit that could be included in camera phones and the likes - the average consumer comparing phone X with an unbranded 10Mpx camera against phone Y with a "Kodiak" camera if the camera is a consideration would be more likely to go with the known brand.

In perfect light conditions the 4S camera is superb, but as with all tiny lenses it's not great in anything less than perfect conditions and quickly loses ground to cheap/old pocket cameras.

RIP!

Time to stockpile Portra and Tri-X...

Damnit, i'm not that rich :(

If they do declare bankruptcy then i really hope this isn't the last we see of them. From what i've seen of their new emulsions they are absolutely breathtaking. Loose them and we've lost probably the most advanced freely available form of imaging.

Really wish they hadn't tried to jump into the digital market for short term gain. If they'd downsized a bit and pushed the benefits of film instead of following the crows then we might well not be having this conversation at all.

that's what I mean. Wifey keeps F45 in her bag, and if needed it comes out. Phones do suffice some of the time, but if not the F45 is miles ahead
