Will IOS' simplisticity lead to it's doom?

I got my first smartphone last xmas and its an android Motorola defy, its crap andriod isnt half the experience than my friends Iphone I used for a few mins.

I want an iphone and will prob get an iphone5.

I cba with fiddling with roms I want a phone that looks good and works very well... andriod is crap, it feels very bitty and don't even get me started on the motorola bloat I can't remove!

You are not comparing Apples with Apples (pardon the pun). The defy is a low end Android phone that costs a quarter of the price of an iPhone. You should try a Galaxy S2, Galaxt Nexus, or one of the recent top end HTC's.

If you compared the defy to the S2, the difference will be equally as big, if not larger.

how often do you need more than 16Gb for a tube journey?!?

ok, it's not a perfect system just yet, but given time it will be the way things go.

the last time i used a re-writeable disk must be 5 years ago now. and as for USB pen drives etc. i avoid them where possible and email or host from a shared f
apple are as popular as they are because they have removed a lot of choice from computing and as such removed a lot of headaches.
Some of my iphone apps were close to or over 1GB each. Navigation and EA games hog space, I regularly had to remove apps to make space for new ones, and lime the number of albums.

Give people the choice. Not everyone wants to store all of their media and personal data within the cloud, where it is not always

+1

have owned an iphone, a zte blade and now a galaxy s2. you cant compare a cheap phone with lesser parts to an expensive one.

The Android experience itself is just faster though, it isn't much different.

The difference is certainly bigger on the Galaxy Nexus though, I'd encourage iPhone users to try it and see what they think.

Hi guys.

I've made three prior posts in this thread. The first one answered the OP's question and you may wish to give it a quick read.

To sum up:

I fully understand the market segment Apple is targeting.

I saw some users (TrUz and "andy") in this thread use 'jail breaking' as a comparison to rooted android saying they equate to the same thing. In affect functionality.

I sought to address this misconception and stated that a jail broken iOS device is not the same as a rooted Android device. [I also noted another shoe horn approach to differing Androids but oh well, let's just focus on this then]

TrUz replied with an image using a screenshot which showed a app on available via jail breaking projecting a overlay themed homescreen to demonstrate the advance theme ability of a jail broken iOS.

I made a detailed explanation that an app to overlay a theme over iOS is not the same as actually being able to rewrite that OS.

That was pretty much it. I was comparing jail breaking to android rooting and trying to address a misconception growing in this thread.

Mattus, you have agreed with me in regards to the higher functionality of an android rooted device. As for the simplicity argument... that's could be a little subjective. I'd argue that people who are jailbreaking their iPhones aren't too bothered about the simplicity either. After all, they are going out of their way to get increased functionality. Why aren't they satisfied with just having the iOS? I suspect the answer will be surprisingly similar to others who root: They like a little tinkering and to get more 'stuff'.

If we're talking about UI design, you could argue that the MIUI video displaying a iOS themed custom rom gives you another great option as well as enjoy a greater level of functionality.

I do not want to say what people should or should not like. Choice. All the more power to it. I have no qualms with people enjoying iOS or a jail broken iPhone. Just note that there are considerable differences between jail breaking and rooting.

It really irks me when people say iOS is simple. iOS and Android are very similar minus the "rooting".

The major differences are:

Widgets
Customizable UI

Other than that the differences aren't huge. It also irks me when people say that only mindless morons buy them...so the department I work in full of seasoned IT professionals (developers/architects/infrastructure) are idiots?

Grr!

As I said, simple is really a positive if anything. It's a phone after all.

If anyone thinks you are an 'idiot' because you have an iPhone, don't waste your time on them.

Does the Galaxy 2 come with samsung bloat? Does the touchscreen work well? Not that impressed with the defy tbh.

As for Andriod to make it good you have to do custom roms, which always seem to be a hassle.

Now I like fiddling with computers but I can't bugger about with a phone, as I need to ensure it stays fucntional as a phone at all times. Not be broken when I bork a rom lol

IOS appears to be better out of the box and gets frequent updates to all models. My Defy is stuck with motorola bloat and 2.2 it's crap. I just use it to phone people and browse at work. I want it to do more but it's a bit sluggish so I cba with all the faff andriod brings to make it work how I want.

EDIT: There is one Andriod phone that interests me a lot to be honest. The Galaxy Note, cross between a tablet and a phone. Does the Note run 4.0? Will it get regular OS updates? Does it have a lot of Samsung bloat on it that you can't delete?

Is it a high quality phone with an exceptional touch screem? Is the hardware as high quality as an iphone?

I am interested in the note too, i love the idea of a big screen as I use my phone mostly for browsing email YouTube calendar, just worried about the portability had a look in shop and it really is big.
Hardware is as good as the iPhone if not better but been android it still lags at times(nexus still lags sometimes too, no matter what they say, android I think will always have transition lag at times because of the way it handles events, I find jerkiness in scrolling etc annoying)
Build quality isn't as premium feeling or looking but I think durability is as good if not better, the screen is stunning and is its biggest selling point I think.
Regular updates will happen for a while but will alwys lag behind the release from google by at least a couple months and t won't be officially supported for as long as a iPhone would.
Note is on 2.3 at the moment but is getting 4.0 vey soon and it runs touch wiz on top though I think you can turn it off but not sure.

no Samsungs come with a fair amount of rubbish you can't get rid of unless you root them and delete the stuff you don't want, you can normaly hide it fairly easily but again it normally requires superuser access and root.

alternatively you can go for a custom rom.

its similar to iphones tbh, there's a fair amount of stuff I don't want on my iphone like stocks, newstand, compass etc, I can shove them all in a folder (apart from newstand which you can put in a folder but it's a bit tricky) but again if you jailbreak you can hide all the icons for what you don't want.

they really aren't dissimilar in that respect and the amount of locked bootloaders popping up for android phones means they'll be as difficult to mess with as iphones once you get past themes and messing with icons.

The Samsung crapware can be removed (or atleast completely hidden from view) without having to root. I noticed more visible bloatware on my iPhone4 than on the Galaxy S2. Sure, I had to remove a few useless icons, but Samsung atleast lets me remove them from the homescreens. On the iPhone I was stuck with Newsstand, Stocks, Game Centre and possibly a few others that I cannot recall.

Anyway the biggest bloatware ever is probably Apples's iTunes software. Every time I login i get popups and adverts trying to get me to update yet again or buy some crap offer. Whwn I connect the Samsung I can just transfer the files I want without hinderance. Not to mention the junk mail I receive from Apple on a weekly basis.

Oh look! It's the imaginary iTunes problems again.

In the last 2 or so years I've never had what you describe. Plus, Android offers nothing like iTunes anyway.

Kies is absolutely dire and you don't need it anyway on Android.

Exactly my point! I haven't installed it because I don't need it, and Samsung do not force it upon me.

Which is good given how poor it is, it's not even comparable to iTunes.

Microsoft are doing a similar thing with Zune for WP7 and that is actually good.

What? That sounds like something you've just made up on the spot. None of that is actually true..!

iTunes never pesters you with special offers. It won't ask you to update unless your iPhone is out of date - which occurs every few months, not 'every time' - and I'm sure even that can be turned off. And in years of owning Apple gear, I've never received an email from Apple which I'd consider junk mail. Only emails concerning my account and receipts for purchases I've made from the iTunes Store.

Can we stick to facts, please?

Just two popups today. One asking to upgrade iTunes and the other asking to upgrde my daughters ipod software.
pop1o.jpg

I know that I can click the "do not ask me again" button, but that only counts for this software version. As soon as another is available, messages popup again.

Now, I only connect my ipod to sync media once every 2 or 3 weeks, but I sseem to get these messages and others all of the time. When I connect the Samsung, Explorer opos up and thats it.

....and I was an Apple enthusiast until last week, and I still own several Apple devices, including an iPad, several iPods, and the old iPhone4. Perhaps this is why the continual popups bug me so much.
