Am I being 'tight' not wanting to share my broadband with a mate?

wwhy pay for a router to limit his traffic when its him who wants it? ask him to buy that atleast if he wants to use it free of charge. if not then tell him to do one.. he sounds childish and needs to grow up

jeez the amount of selfish people on this thread is mindboggling!

he is your friend so ofc let him use it. if your speed/bandwith is a problem if you're streaming or playing a game, you can call/talk to him and say "Hey m8 i need the internet now, please log off for the amount of time i need". am sure he would log off and you would have no bandwith issues. if his constant usage really impedes your access then you can cut him off and explain why. He may miss the internet connection but he can't hold it against you if he abused the privelege

when i lived in london i had my wi-fi open to the neighborhood and never really had any issues with bandwith (there weren't 20mb lines back then it was more like 2mb on a BT voyager), none that was something i can remember at least. I only have a password now because it came default with BT homehub. now obviously if i couldn't access the internet because of too much usage i would have turned the tap off. reality was i never had to do it

you leave your internet at risk of people being able to view and know everything you go on and log it.

Selfish? How is it selfish that he doesn't want some guy who he hasn't even stayed in contact with to use his internet for free?

I let my next door neighbour use mine (he doesn't earn too much). Can be annoying at times when playing on the xbox if he is also using the net.

He has said though that if it causes me problems to let him know and he will buy a 'dongle'.

I read the OP and your "friend" sounds like a **** as you quite rightly said, if he quit smoking he could get a decent internet connection.

If he's using the internet its only fair that he pay half of it

Wtf bearing does that have on this thread? Are you saying that it's part of capitalist culture not to share with those less fortunate?

PS if capitalism meant that I could either be a fat little ******* on a skinny on death's door, I'd choose the former thanks.

I'd stay well clear for the simple fact that if he does anything illegal (eg. piracy, kiddie porn) you'll most likely be the one liable.

By the sound of it you don't know each other too well anyway, if he was a true friend he wouldn't be telling you to **** off for not giving him free internet.

I just had an idea, give him what he wants, but limit his usage, give him a 5GB limit and when he complains just tell him it will cost him if he wants to increase his limit

I just noticed the update. Shouldnt have really made it personal, with regards to his smoking. Should have just left it at a firm no. Without reasons past the fact you dont want to.

Also, The guy who said its selfish to not want to share your internet connection. So? If i want to be selfish and not share my internet, thats up to me and\or the op :)

I see the result as good but I think it would have been better if you enabled BTFON as I said in a previous post and asked him to use that. All of the QoS and payment issues would have been taken care of!
