I formatted and reinstalled Windows and all programs today and am only using 15gb. Would it be me going with a 64gb drive over the 128gb, I have seen the max write speed on the 64gb is only 95mb/sec compared to 175mb/sec on the 128gb version (and 260 on the 256gb and 512gb)

Currently I have this motherboard which only supports SATA2

On ATTO benchmark read/write speeds are around 120mb/sec. Therefore the 64gb version of the drive would be slower writing than my velociraptor (but a lot faster at reading)

I would like to go for the 128gb but it is double the cost and I probably wouldnt need the extra storage, however there's no point me getting a slower drive

It's all down the personal use when it comes to the storage space you use, i have a 64gb M4 and that is all i need.

As for speeds comparing the 64gb to a 128gb M4, you probably wont be able to tell the difference with real world usage on SATA II speeds.

You be amazed how quick that increases

I recommend you get the 128GB or you always be fighting against low space..

Im going to clone the drive tonight so if it increases I will just go back to the 15gb version

I take it there wont be any problems cloning (using Acronis) from SSD > Velociraptor and from Velociraptor > SSD?

another vote for 128 ... once you have the drive and put your os and a couple progs - youll wish you had double the space to put even more on there.

I had a bit bigger budget and got a 256 - and just have my whole c drive on there - its nice not having to worry about what progs to put where and whose getting the speed benefit etc ...

Thanks all.

Ordered the 128gb version. Presuming it ships with firmware 009, do I jsut have to set AHCI mode in bios? Will this not effect the other mechanical drives I have?

I will then follow this guide here - http://www.overclock.net/t/1156654/seans-windows-7-install-optimization-guide-for-ssds-hdds

ya it would make sense to set to ahci mode - ya it will probably effect the other drives also ...
btw dont forget to eventually update to the new bios 304 or something ...

Can the drive be checked in BIOS for the 0309 firmware? (without installing windows first, checking, then having to reinstall)

How does AHCI mode effect SATA drives? (I have one velocirpaptor which I will be cloning to and 3 x 1tb drive - a WD Black, a WD green and a Sumsung F1)

edit - to answer my second question, it looks like sata drives will not be effected - http://www.sevenforums.com/hardware-devices/162634-coming-xp-enable-ahci-sata-drives.html

Well ... assuming its brand new the drive should list the bios on the front of the drive (if I remember right) ... bios update was easy enough done via a usb stick; you dont even need to do pre install of windows but why not ...

ya I meant the 309 bios :)

64gb is far too small, get the 128.

I went for the 128gb. My theory is that 64gb is probably fine for desktop as im using 15gb now with Windows and the apps i used installed.

However I may decide to sell my machine and get a laptop, in which case the 128gb would come in handy (plus the 128gb has higher write speeds)

Most people who buy a 60gb ssd end up upgrading it before too long. Just go straight for a 128gb or bigger and save the extra cost and hassle in the long run.

I was fairly dead-set on just making do with a 64GB SSD, but the more I thought about it and longevity, I made the plunge for the 128GB. It also helped that I found a new one for £135. :D

Dont mean to pi55 on your chips, but didnt ocuk have them for £132 inc?

Either way, I got mine new yesterday for £129.99 inc

Not then. They were nearly £150 I think. It's likely inevitable the prices will decrease.

£1 a gb for what sounds like a decent SSD is ok though. I remember when mechanical was at the £1 per gb point (and also when I paid £250 for a 4gb drive)

Needless to say these M4s will be soon be £50 for 128gb and £30 for 64gb

Please expand on the word soon. I think it could be 3-5 years before SSD's will be £0.50 per GB.
