Show us your drawings/artwork

Yeh TT Fusion at the moment.

All depends what you want to do, most people here don't have degree's. I worked myself into a frenzy to get a first and I sometimes wish I hadn't. A portfolio with a good understanding of 'art' is all that's needed.

I'm sure the degree will come in handy some day, obviously your portfolio does the speaking for you, but the degree could potentially be the deciding factor in future positions you apply for.

My brother just got his first job @ TT Fusion as a QA Tester, he studied Games Design though.
Out of curiosity, did you study @ Bolton Uni? I've heard that it's abit of a feeder Uni to the likes of TT/Codemasters, probably due to locality.

I used to be great at art at school. I haven't picked up a pencil since I left though :(. I guess you could call some of the furniture I have made art, but I would still like to start drawing again.

This thread is a great inspiration and I will make it my mission next week to buy a few decent pencils and some sketch paper.

Great work guys, I have enjoyed reading through the thread :).

Honestly the degree hardly counts, once you're in its experience then portfolio. When someone applies their portfolio is sent round, there is zero mention of education as it has no credit towards your ability in terms of 'art'. If you can paint you can paint, having a qualification means nothing next to it.

Bet I walked past your brother a few times today as the QA lot are next to my kitchen here :)

I graduated from Leeds uni 5 years ago. TT has a few connections with Preston and a few courses in the North west I think.

/edit By the way I'm trying to make a mockery of you being enrolled on a course. As long as you're getting good direction its worth while, just trying to point out the actual qualification doesn't hold much weight.

Cheers for posting Meekon, it's nice to see any form of advice, no matter how big or small from someone in the industry.

I'm not a gamer at all but I would like to work in entertainment at some level, whether it be advertising, film, games or so forth.

The kind of things that inspire me are well thought out mechanical design, transportation interiors or architecture, think Syd Mead for Blade Runner or Viktor Antonov for Half Life 2. Designs that are completely believable and convincing to audiences regardless of genre.

Browsing various game related websites you see a mass array of over the top 'WoW' style 'character' renderings, I don't particularly see the appeal or hold much interest but it seems to be the trend amongst designers starting out?

ps. did you not use to be called Baz on here?

Everything was created by myself and took ~9 weeks to finish alongside 2 other assignments. I was really happy with the result considering it was my first full Environment piece :D

These are awesome!

Lol I'm sure the word 'Not' is meant to be in there somewhere?! xD

Haha oops! What a time to miss 'not' out, sorry!

@ Shifty

I guess everyone is inspired by different styles. Some people like myself will be doing 'photo realistic' stuff so in you're spare time you will want to go berserk on stylised art. Or it depends what games you work/want to work on. Painting a highly stylised texture from scratch is a lot harder than wrapping a photo round something. I'm having to do some pretty standard stuff for my portfolio with no real inspiration just to knock some pieces out for the level I'm at. I'll be hoping back to painting stylised stuff when I got a nice collection of work again.

All I can say is for getting a job you want to nail all the foundations and not try and be the next Giger etc :)

Yes I use to be bAz but that nickname was from a long time ago!

Does any body have and decent tutorials on shading with pencil? And suggestions to what paper to use? The paper in my pics above is 110gsm if I remember right. It feels to Skippy to me I want something more grainy if that makes sense?

EDIT: Bah, hosting not working, but will post some stuff later.

I dug around a backup disc and found loads of stuff i did years back. I also found a crude 3d animation of a female masturbating. What the hell was I thinking!!?

Lol! Why the hell did you model/animate that type of subject ^^

Here's another character design from me, probably going to do one more orthographic and then start modelling next week.

110gsm is ok, There are loads of different types of paper out there though. I mainly use cartridge paper from anywhere between 90-180gsm, depends on the books I buy.

The Gnomon Workshop has some good fundamental video's, but they have to be purchased... ahem

I'm sure they're some video's on youtube with some basic tips and tricks, but I don't know of any off the top of my head if I'm honest.

done abit more tonight, no idea how to do facial hair yet as its the first portrait ive done lol
looks out of proportion because of the collar lol

Really liking this one. Figure is really strong, liking you're anatomy sketching on your blog. Although not sure on the design so much, is it a bow or a fist weapon?

It's a 'magical' bow and fist weapon, I'm going for a soul caliber type design, so I thought a bow only wouldn't cut it ad he needed something to use close quarters.

I see, just maybe look into the function. I'd be a bit scared of swinging that around with how sharp the bow ends are!

It's fantasy, function usually takes a back seat to aesthetic, if this was Sci-Fi or to be more Earth bound then I'd agree.

Some good examples are characters like Voldo or Nightmare, late game stuff from Warcraft or a majority of fantasy games for that matter; Stuff tends to be over the top or unwieldy. These types of weapons also help convey the characters personality or help narrative.
The sharp ends and points suggest the character potentially isn't to friendly, but being able to wield it suggest confidence and skill.

If we're talking functionality it wouldn't have half as many curves or points, his hair would be shorter or tied back, his boots would be chamfered and toe guards would be a single unit as opposed to being split... now imagine a character that looked like that, it wouldn't be half as dynamic and potentially look out of place for the target audience.

Like I say, I absolutely agree functionality is important although I believe it it's less important in the realms of fantasy.

I mean check out Voldo xD http://fenixware.net/fab/images/chars/game/voldo_soc-320.jpg

Sorry but I would have to totally have to disagree. Character design is always rooted in function on some level. You can't just claim something be fantasy and do whatever, it still has to function to some kind of laws.

Check out any character design principles and you'll see. There is nothing wrong with being over the top but thinking about how it would actually be wielded, balanced, sit when not used.

"I mean check out Voldo xD http://fenixware.net/fab/images/char...do_soc-320.jpg"

Voldo is a BDSM character and is a sucker for pain. It functions within his character. I just think the bow needs a bit more thought. If I was firing an arrow and had to move the bow back to myself I would be cutting myself up with the two inner 'sharpy parts'

You're getting confusing fantasy with function, they are separate. He could have an arm on his head as long as it was balanced an anatomically correct.

Everything must function in character design!
