So, you're saying within the entertainment industry there's a lack of architectural/interior/hard surface/mechanical designers, Meekan?

If so, this could be beneficial, it's the kind of role I'm after.

Sorry but I would have to totally have to disagree. Character design is always rooted in function on some level. You can't just claim something be fantasy and do whatever, it still has to function to some kind of laws.

Check out any character design principles and you'll see. There is nothing wrong with being over the top but thinking about how it would actually be wielded, balanced, sit when not used.

Dude, Final Fantasy had gun blades.

GUN. BLADES! You can not be suggesting that the massively popular and successful Final Fantasy game got it all wrong with their iconic character and weapon design!?

Haha yes but it functions! You can go as crazy as you want as long as it functions. The gun blade is essentially a glorified bayonet, think about that. That functioned pretty well in WWI WWII!

And the bow does; twist it to one side slightly and pull the string back and I can't see the bow compressing any more. Besides, he's already said it's a magical bow - it probably fires from happy thoughts :)

Its not that there's a lack, it's that there is more environment artists required to build a world then one protagonist character and enemies.

For someone like yourself environment concept art then learning the skills to produce that in a 3d environment with technical skills would cover a job and your passion. Then progressing as your skills improve to just your painting :)

Yeh your missing my point by saying it's a magical bow, I explained that earlier.

I wasn't disagreeing with you ^^ I wasn't implying you can do whatever either, I was just stating that in some genre's aimed at certain audiences the need for function isn't always paramount, certain characters in Soul Caliber are perfect examples of this, limited function but OTT aesthetic value.
The bow/fist wep in my image has function, it has a grip and arm guard, it's balanced but also looks wield-able, is there anything inparticular you think that stands as being bad?

I was using other similar designs to inspire me, such as

Like I said, I agree, functionality and practicality are definite fundamentals but the further you get into the realms of fantasy the less of an artistic obligation you have to adhere to them.

Knew the Wow design were coming as they reminded me of the karazhan bow I use to have. They were never used as melee weapons so they function perfectly as a bow. Secondly they have no sharp end pointing back past the forearm area.

Look at your design, you have two extremely sharp point leading back up. If you was to use these in a melee style fashion you would be most likely be cutting yourself up.

Every part needs to be though about how it will be used. A fist weapon with sharp ends coming back at you isn't going to be good news.

Make it retractable or more shield like. This is how your designs will be critiqued by the community. Every part will be looked at and asked how it works.

In the simplest form maybe just deleting those two reversed spikes would remove the problem. Also shape is reversed on the back of the bow and screws the perspective.

Ok man that's some cool feedback, I'll be sure to look at it when it comes to the orthographics :)

It's all up to you but this is what happens day to day. Be prepared to be ripped to pieces!

Do you post on game art forums?

Yep I started posting some stuff on CA and GA forums recently! I'm cool with the feedback aslong as it's specific if you get what I mean, the stuff like draw/paint overs is nice when using it to compliment a statement, so I appreciate that very much :D

And please 'rip' away aslong as it's to a point(see what I did there?) where I can see what you're getting at^^

Thanks again and keep the critiques coming, any feedback is good feedback!

Great! Taking crits is a great skill to have. I remember we had some people on trial 2 years back and one wouldn't take any crits or advice. This was from a Lead Artist, he didn't get the job.

Yeah, totally agree, I learnt long ago not to get to attached to your work and be open to change. At the end of the day if you're working for a client or Art Lead you need to be willing to accommodate their visions and inputs!

As to your work, I'd personally love to see a wireframe view to:D The only thing I'd really critique is maybe the garage door and air extractor/unit thing seem to have a very matte surface, is it intentional? It could also be down to the res of the pic or the depth of field. Like I said further up though fella, great work.

done abit more tonight, no idea how to do facial hair yet as its the first portrait ive done lol
looks out of proportion because of the collar lol
any tips on how to cut away fine lines? i have a kneadable eraser but even with the thinnest point i can make i cant cut out fine lines.

Is that Snake?

Fine work sir.

True, I should have maybe bumped up the spec a bit, most of it's lost on the res. I'll go back and up the level if I can be bothered laying it out again.

I messed up big time, I only realised today my mirror tool had stopped flipping the normals with the model so I have a fair few inverted normal maps on those screenies haha. yet again thats hidden with the res.

Yeah supposed to be snake/big boss. Atleast people can tell who it is lol would love to be able to do the digital stuff above. Looks insane great work guys
