Wow, looking good. The weapon has a much better feel with the new design.

I can see I mistook part of his forearm armour as the weapon before, it's much more defined now. I like what you've done with the lighting.

Just one thing I personally would do (just did it) tilt the whole image to the left. As it stands now I feel as if I'm falling to the right. That's what I feel though.

Great, the lighting really makes it POP!

Looks like fun. What would you recommend for someone starting out in digital art? I have worked with most types of medium before from pencil up to oil but never tried out digital as the tablets never seemed natural to me.

Could you recommend some equipment to try out?

Anyone use an ipad? Would that work. Both myself and wife are very artistic and was thinking about getting her an ipad for her birthday. (Might be able to borrow it to join in the fun :D)

Thanks

you can use the ipad as a cheap medium as i belive there is an app called sketch club that has a fair few fetures that photo shop uses. other then that you can get a wacom bamboo for about £30 which are pretty good apparently.

Was looking at the Wacom bamboo selection. What can you tell me about the different models?

personally couldnt tell you anything as only graphics tablet ive used was about 6 years ago and i suspect they have come along way since.
a few guys in this thread use the bamboo as they are cheap and work really well. so maybe somebody else could shed some light or try you tube for reviews etc

I have the wacom bamboo and its a great introduction to the world of graphic tablets. Its most certainly the bottom end of the market but its a sensible way to avoid wasting money of the higher-end products.

The bamboo works great for a lot of different styles of work and approach and is cheap enough to be written off as an aside or experiment.

Yeah would be interested in a bamboo as I can see if I like it and then maybe upgrade if I enjoy it.

Would appreciate advice from users who have one. Pick one up second hand.

A5 size sounds about right. Wouldn't want smaller as I have big hands and like to be quite fluid with my strokes.

So which model and why are they better?

I bought a used Wacom Intuos 3 A4 for £84 off Ebay last month to use with Photoshop.

Just need to find a cheap airbrush to use with it, but most seem to be around £100 or so.

All Bamboo units have the same performance spec with 1,024 levels of pressure and 2,540dpi. The base model 'Bamboo Pen' is just a tablet with the Bamboo models above it incorporating 4 express keys and multi-touch, in an effort to try and improve your workflow and level of interactivity.

Size is your preference, be weary the 'Bamboo Pen&Touch' doesn't come with any additional software whereas the rest of the models atleast come with ArtRage, with the top model Bamboo, the 'Bamboo Fun Medium Pen&Touch' coming with Photoshop Elements 9 and Corel Painter Essentials 4.

Not worried about software. Have a few good art packages that I can use.

So just looking for tablet and pen.

So no difference with model numbers 450, 460, 470 etc

ALSO, I wouldn't count out other brands if you're just beginning, Wacom are undoubtedly the best for top end quality, but there are units out there which are cheaper then the Bamboo's and far more responsive.

My first Tablet was an A6 Bamboo One (http://uk.shop.wacom.eu/Products/Others/Other-Wacom-products/Bamboo-One/?c=70175)

But it was way to small, I then opted to purchase a 'Trust TB-7300' which was 4 times the size, and double the DPI @ 4,080. It was more responsive and much more comfortable and only set me back ~£75. It's only downside was that it required batteries, but in the 20months I used it I replaced them once!!! When I ran out of nibs ~18 months in, Trust sent me some for free to! It was a solid piece of kit which I did a lot of work on up until I replaced it this January with the Cintiq.

Those are different iterations of the Bamboo product lines, the '470' being the latest iteration which was released in September I believe?! They tend to get refreshed every 12-18 months, as far as I'm away the last 2 lines have been the same spec though, just a different design.

Ok thanks guys. So is A5 the recommended size?

Do they have a particular model name or just Wacom bamboo 440, 450, etc

They don't really use 'A5, A4' as naming conventions as the usable area's are not the same measurements(and those sizes of paper are not as common in other countires), they quote their sizes in either '000mm x 000mm' format or using extensions like 'Small, Medium, Large' etc....

Again the size is personal preference, a few factors need to be considered. Desk space, the size of your screen (Remember what you draw will vary depending on the size of the display you're mapping) and most importantly how you draw.
I prefer to draw from the shoulder/elbow so a small tablet tends to hurt my wrist and feel really confining, on the flip side, other people prefer smaller sizes because they rely on their wrist more, so the extra space of a larger tablet would be wasted.

Why not pop out to a shop, as these units are in good supply, just get one opened up and see if you prefer the size.
