Awesome dad is awesome...

Lol cant see - so many high horses. Would it make some of you happier if he and his gf simply rearranged their finances on paper and instead said his JSA pays only for food and bills, and his gf pays for the Sky? I mean it wouldn't actually be any different at all, but maybe some of you would stop whining. Should his working gf not be allowed to have Sky in the house because OP is on JSA (whilst genuinely looking for work) and nobody on JSA should be able to have Sky? Would any of you in the same situation refuse to take JSA on principle?

People on JSA and benefits should be given food vouchers/electric vouchers etc which are linked in to an ID. then only £25 petty cash or so

so vouchers only work for your ID, how and why couldn't this work?

Do savings accounts still exist in this country?

If they do you try to spending every last penny of your money.

Many of which you could probably get for free whilst on JSA.

Training courses and JSA is a tricky one, the ones you get through it are generally rubbish (more about back handers, etc. than actually helping anyone) and quite often being on a training course (something you've picked yourself not a JSA one) even one that would help you get back into work can actually fall foul of the JSA rules and end up making you ineligible for the benefits you need. The job center seems to exist purely to manage unemployment and not to actually help people back into work.

It's the fact that so many people don't have a problem with it and that benefits are so readily available is why this country is in the smelly brown stuff that it's in.

We just need a 'buy british' campaign tbh. Then it wouldn't matter whether JSA people spent their money on suits or tv, it would just circulate in the UK and enrich the economy.

its a tough life eh? Just managed to save up enough for my first house deposit over the last 5 years and have been lucky enough never to be unemployed. Nice that your dads done the hard bit for you.

On the other hand if I was unemployed now I wouldn't smoke, drink, have sky and most likely broadband too. I also disagree with people using OUR tax money for luxuries such as those, that the rest of us WORK for. Granted you are the tip of a very big iceberg, but it annoys me nonetheless.

I have a feeling the OP is regretting putting that last sentence in now :p.

Not that my opinion matters, but personally I would have gone the basic route, in fact I did when I bought my house:

£9.50 per month for O2 Broadband (Up to 10Mb)
£13 per month Telephone with free evening and weekend
Freeview.

Now in the past, any sort of Internet would be classed as a luxury but times change so now it is pretty much a necessity, especially when it comes to job hunting ;).

Using JSA for what in my opinion are luxuries is not technically 'wrong', more not particularly ethical.

Aside from that last faux pas of a sentence, congrats on the house and I hope you manage to sort work out soon :)

But he WORKED in the past paying money into the benifits system, he's just claiming them back now that he's out of work.

People with self respect...

Exactly. Being on JSA and then posting about getting Sky HD and being given a house (with a small bathroom) on the internet isn't exactly a high point in life!

Op should put on his poker face and go out there and earn his keep otherwise in a few years that house is going to turn into a shed like they all do when people who are too lazy to work have lived in them.

As I mentioned earlier depends entirely on the ethics of the person - I have absolutely no problem if people who are genuinely doing their best to find work spend their JSA on luxuries... someone just sitting on their arse all day making no attempt to even find a job tho I'd find annoying to.

Yeah agreed, it's probably the way I've worded it that can be taken the wrong way.

on JSA and struggling to pay the rent?

WTF? ever heard of housing benefit?

From my albiet brief experience of unemployment housing benefits appear to have fixed amounts for fixed circumstances and slot you into the nearest applicable circumstance so often you end up having to top up the rest of your rent out of JSA (or in some less common cases they actually pay you more than your rent).

Come on people, you really shouldn't be surprised the northerners and jocks in this thread see no problem with this, while us plucky southerners prop them up :p

;)

It doesn't bother me tbh, JSA doesn't last forever and if he can spend half of it and live off the rest after those luxuries good luck to him. I'd have different priorities myself but then I haven't been given somewhere rent free.

Who said I was too lazy to work? No one!

They wouldn't pay it because I am under 25.
