I'm enjoying my 480 SLI laying waste to BF3 at 100+ fps, without any nonsense crossfire issues :cool:

Why on earth should it bother me how hot they are? If they work its frankly a bizzare thing to worry about.

Very true mate.

If your rig can handle the gpu cooling/exhausts/psu that's required then 480 is the only card to buy!

On the other hand if you have a small factor pc that 'heat is the enemy' then the 7850 would be far more suitable to prevent meltdown, the 480 is a bad choice in this case due to the even higher temps/stress on the 480/system.

I agree, although speaking as a M-ITX user, the heat problem is largely dependant on your chassis.

I built my latest system using the Silverstone SG07 and I've no heat problems at all. The GPU is situated right next to a well ventilated side panel.

I am running a GTX 470, which has no problem in the chassis. I've even seen people get a GTX 590 into the chassis with it's standard PSU and have no real problems.

So the GTX 480 is still a brilliant card to get, especially at it's current price.

When Kepler comes out, if it's faster it will be pricier. It will be a while (say 6 months) before prices hit the levels where you get a card like this for this price. If you're waiting 6 months, you either don't need the card or you're willign to wait 6 extra months indefinitely. There will always be better deals.

Oh yeah we know HD 7850 also wins in 3D mark 11 against the GTX 480 and obviously more memory, lower power consumption and less heat help for better overclocks. The HD 7850 overclockes very well, without need for extra water cooling etc...

Skyrim - 570 wins
Civ 5 - 570 wins

10 games benched and 570 wins 6...7850 wins 2...tied 2

Just my tuppence worth. I just want best info.
 
So all of sudden it seems tessellation benchmarks are not important any more? A year ago it was all the rage on these forums to determine if a graphics card was good or not.

How times change.

To be objective you have to take more than one review.

At the moment for the money the GTX 480 is stilla brilliant card.

There are more sites, and as such I suggest anyone including yourself look at all of them. Then make a choice.
 
I have owned 4 diffrent 480's and i can tell you as long as there in a case with good airflow there are quite and run cool even when over clocked to 850 on the core and upping the volts

Also the 480's scale very well when overclocked which pushes them past 570 performance and and to stock 580 performance and at £185 there is no other gpu with the same Bang per buck...

This + if you do any 3D rendering in Blender or any rendering engine with CUDA support then the GTX480 is a great choice, you'll not find another card with 480 CUDA cores for £185.

It's clearly a winner all round :)
