Piracy - Today's Discussion

Old thread I know but hey someone else bumped it and coincedental I wanted to download a game I had bought on Direct2drive a while back, just now.
However, they no longer exist and the people that bought them out still have my account details, okay sure; log in... oh wait, no games? Google the issue, it's the same for everyone.

Already paid for it, so pirating it harms nobody, nothing can be said to argue otherwise other than legal wrongs.

well it has quite an extensive free to play option that most people will try to see if they like the game plus, it's not the easiest game to create a server for so not much point in cracking it.

It was also cracked way back in 2009 but nothing new seems to have been for it.

Its not that simple- free to play has only appeared last August, before that it was a usual $40 per DVD game. In 2009, Pirate Bay had a RoF torrent but it was an uncracked game that could run in demo mode for 2 weeks. I've never heard of any version of RoF being cracked.

I had no end of issues with GTA IV/EFLC from D2D. It was Games For Windows Live giving most of the grief though

Ended up pirating the games (which I own twice - retail disks lost, D2D download that wouldn't install properly). Wasted many many hours on that :(

CD Project RED will not use any DRM in future PC games, reports Joystiq, saying the Polish developer made a statement to that effect today during the Game Developer's Conference. The company most recently took a stand on the topic with The Witcher 2, selling a DRM-free version on GOG.com and removing the DRM from the retail version when it caused problems, prompting a lawsuit from Namco Bandai. "Every subsequent game we will never use any DRM anymore, it's just over-complicating things," said CD Projekt RED CEO Marcin Iwinski. "We release the game. It's cracked in two hours, it was no time for Witcher 2. What really surprised me is that the pirates didn't use the GOG version, which was not protected. They took the SecuROM retail version, cracked it and said 'we cracked it'." After his presentation, Iwinski expanded on his thoughts for Joystiq. "DRM does not protect your game," he told them. "If there are examples that it does, then people maybe should consider it, but then there are complications with legit users."

If I'm interested in a game, I download the pirated version and use it as a demo. I don't want to be shafted, and I've saved many a penny that way. (This only applies to games that are released without a previous demo, of course).

If I like it, I buy the full version and delete the pirated one. If I don't, I also delete it. After all, what would be the point of then keeping it?

Since the DRM stuff has been going apeshit, I don't get anything from Activision, Ubisoft, or EA, either pirated or otherwise, I just don't bother with them any more. One glance at the retail version box is sufficient.

I don't consider myself breaking the law, although technically I am. I don't really care because I see this as the only way of protecting myself and my cash.

Wrong company but reading this thread LOLUbisoft, you deserve to have your games pirated for your attitude.

Well, I can honestly say I have not bought a Ubisoft game of late (unless it's been really cheap in a Steam Sale) for exactly those reasons, restrictive DRM that leaves me uncertain as to whether or not I will be able to play it when I want to. Oh, and the fact that by the time they make it to pc I've all but forgotten about their latest release.

Their own DRM is what is causing the massive amount of piracy of their games, even people who buy the game sometimes end up having to pirate it just to play.

I'm the exact same. No doubt ubisoft have lost sales, popularity, pr everything but they don't even have the sense to admit it and fix the problem. Their loss, plenty of smarter devs out there who I will happily give my money to.

While valves approach is far more intelligent, as usual, I suppose piracy is a personal decision for everyone but personally I have never pirated a game as I want to support and improve this wonderful industry long term.

DRM is a joke. A pirate who got his game for free can install it trouble free and not have to worry about the DRM issue.

A genuine consumer buys the game and gets nothing but grief. Also I hate the term "Console port". We have superior machines compared to the massively out dated PS3/Xbox360, so treat us with the games we deserve.

I know GFX don't make a game but they should at least give us a decent console game with all the bells and whistles. GTA4 was a complete joke.

The only reason DRM still exists is because of the following:

- The ignorance of investors who don't have a clue about the company/industry they've invested in.

- DRM companies who make money by gift-wrapping digital media in dogturd, and will fight tooth-and-nail to validate thier jobs.

Gabe has it spot on, the success of Steam confirms this.

I don't pirate games. I buy everything and pretty much only via steam. If the game comes with silly DRM I just don't buy it.

5 years ago I think I might have been more tempted to pirate stuff. Now, I just can't see any reason to.
