Australian Grand Prix 2012, Albert Park Circuit - Race 1/20

I just hope that McLaren can keep up the pace, they need to ramp up the development to stay ahead. They're not actually that far ahead of Mercedes, and I thought Schumacher and Rosberg both have a couple of messy laps. Although from the sound of things, the f-duct seems to be in development with McLaren as well seeing as Whitmarsh will not protest!

maybe he wants to keep mercedes engines in 2014 or whenever the contract ends :D

LOL Arknor I'm not surprised you have a bad feeling. Quote from the Barcelona testing thread

Sorry had to dig that out :D

lol forgot about that :D
lets hope hes crashes into both mclarens at the first corner and msc romps off into the lead.
i guess i dont have to fear kimi...

maybe soon people will get just how hard mscs comeback was, lol heard kimi refused to go out yesterday when it was wet yet msc loves those conditions still

Saw the highlights. Unbelievable what happened.

Great to see MSC finally able to challenge the top guns. Wouldn't it be amazing to see him on the podium for once.

Grosjean is the man of the day, really proved that Lotus could actually get on the podium this year. Just remarkable that Lotus have been able to go from almost zero to hero in a year. Or was it 2 years. I wonder what the chances are of Lotus being able to win the championship or come 2nd or 3rd. I don't honestly think they would but it would be nice to see Lotus and Mercedes challenging McLaren this year instead of Redbull and Ferrari. I suspect though that Redbull will get their act together and start winning everything after a race or two.

Kimi Raikkonen being rude as usual and not wanting to talk to Jake.

No Redbull on the front row.

And McLarens 1 & 2.

Talk about an exciting series of events!

Yeah the race should be interesting for more than one reason.

It's the first race of the season with the new cars
Vettel isn't on the front row and we'll be seeing how he races mid-field
Kimi Raikkonen will no doubt want to do some actual racing in the capable Lotus, lots of overtaking there possibly
Will be seeing how fast Mercedes are during the race compared to last season

And will McLaren be able to hold onto a victory?

Exciting!

Got to say I am not a fan of change.

Just watching F1 SKY HD now that is recorded and it seems so less professional than the BBC. I know it is there first time and all that.

Plus adverts? Wtf? Thought they promised no adverts? Not actually got to the qualifying yet, but wont be happy if adverts come on through the qauli and race.

Don't worry, the qualifying and race are completely advert free. There were adverts through practice that got me worried but the qualifying was fine.

They've said that all along.

Overall, Sky did a damn good job for their first event and Crofty and Brundle are an excellent combination, but it was still great to hear Crofty and Ant bitching at each other through the FP sessions.

All in all 9/10 so far.

I'm really annoyed with the BBC for not getting the rights to the opening Grand Prix. TBH, I'm annoyed with the BBC anyway. They're spending all this tax payers money jetting a load of ***** on holiday to Australia to cover some highlights. I would have prefered them to not show any of it and spend the many millions they are wasting on other programs like the interesting science ones. I'm also really annoyed with Bernie Ecclestone for not keeping it free-to-view.

I still watch it freely, it just won't be live it'll be the next day. Imagine if the BBC only showed half the Olympics because Sky had all the other rights? Olympic ***** wouldn't shut up about that.

Really interesting start to the season though with the Mercedes in a challanging position, Red Bull actually having to race and the Ferraris nowhere to be seen! Lotus Renault contending too is interesting. Bring on the race. There will be a stream here it was posted in the NASCAR thread. Really good quality I've found (the donation list speaks for the quality tbh)!

will mercedes keep up the pace in the race or is their special drs making up some extra time?
looked like the car was as planted as anything and i doubt the drs duct is as big a benefit as other teams imagine

regarding the bbc i watched there highlights program and why bother having jake and dc on? they didnt really do anything it just seemed like a waste of time

Was only able to watch the highlights on BBC but thought they did a decent enough job, was nice not having to wait in-between sessions :)

Have to say what a great start to the season, what with the first 2 qualifying sessions effectively being like winter testing with drivers strewn all over the place. Though I'm not a fan, McLaren have certainly done a pretty good job it seems, especially considering they are using a completely different nose design.

Over the moon that Michael seems to have sorted out his single lap pace and is at the important end of the grid for the start, just hope his epic getaway ability off the line pays dividends as he could well be on for a podium tomorrow.

Other special mentions definitely have to go to Grosjean and Maldonado, fantastic job and certainly must give Kimi and Bruno hope of coming through the field as their respective cars certainly appear to have a decent amount of pace.

A bit disappointed with Force India but will have to wait and see if they have decent race pace and as always I will be keeping an eye out for Kobaybashi :p to see if he can work his magic.

Have already stocked up on the energy drinks and have a 360 to play until the race tomorrow morning so really looking forward to it :)

Just remarkable that Lotus have been able to go from almost zero to hero in a year.

Bear in mind they qualified 6th and finished 3rd here last year.

No adverts during qualifying or the race. There will be adverts in the build up and post event.

They've said that all along.

But repeatedly ensuring they mention 'in 2012' or 'this season' every time they say it, so that they're free to plaster it in adverts next year once everyone with the willpower of a wet lettuce has signed up and got used to having Sky :p

Hehehe. Me too.

I've now seen qualifying on BBC and it would appear that at the time Alonso went off, he was lying in 3rd place.

I would suggest that his 3rd place qualifying isnt a true reflection of Ferrari's true pace and that Alonso could've got it into the top 10.

Still...Ferrari are not anywhere near the front and need to make a decision on this year (ie. attempt to race and score as many points as possible OR begin to develop next years car, but testing various aspects of their current car, in the races this year).

I agree with your glorified test sessions idea - it makes complete sense, but Im not sure RBR are there yet , it really depends how tomorrow goes (maybe Merc are flattering to decieve slightly due to using DRS around a lot more of the lap than they can during the race),ie so RBR are actually further forward than they appear. Admittedly it doesnt change the time they are "missing" behind pole,

No one will know the full picture until tomorrow, and maybe not even then depending on reliability / accidents etc. But it has to be said, I dont think anyone can really change anything until China, Malaysia will surely be far too soon to get any parts even shipped /air freighted unless they are already ready I suppose.

The thing about Alonso 's time is, sure maybe Ferrari isnt as far back as they look (indeed he was 3rd or 4th when he went off, even if we dont have a realistic comparison to all the cars on the grid on the same tyres etc) but even so imagine fighting such a twitchy car for 70 laps , Alonso may well be a fantastic driver, but that car looks like a rattlesnake ready to strike around even the tamest corners.

I will be absolutely stunned if Ferrari could even make regular podiums this season without some freak results with that car, (compared to how solid and decent the front three or four teams are), because they are surely going to have to go RIGHT back to basics and start from the beginning again , well as much as they are permitted to do during the season.

Exstaticly happy for Williams, lets just hope it isnt just a flash in the pan and it is a fundamentally good car underneath (of course aided by the now Championship winning engine for the last two seasons). Even if /when ferrari recover William's place in the top ten are one 's being threatend (especially if Kimi can catch up with his team mate)

Yeah, I was perfectly happy with with the BBC qualifying. Great to see MSC up there. The thing I'd like to see more than anything this year is MSC in a properly competitive car.

one thing I didnt like is that they edited far too many single laps imo, did the viewer get a single complete lap apart from LH's pole lap (even this was after the event)

Other than that I liked it - and even thought Ben Edwards did ok
