Hehehe. Me too.
I've now seen qualifying on BBC and it would appear that at the time Alonso went off, he was lying in 3rd place.
I would suggest that his 3rd place qualifying isnt a true reflection of Ferrari's true pace and that Alonso could've got it into the top 10.
Still...Ferrari are not anywhere near the front and need to make a decision on this year (ie. attempt to race and score as many points as possible OR begin to develop next years car, but testing various aspects of their current car, in the races this year).
I agree with your glorified test sessions idea - it makes complete sense, but Im not sure RBR are there yet , it really depends how tomorrow goes (maybe Merc are flattering to decieve slightly due to using DRS around a lot more of the lap than they can during the race),ie so RBR are actually further forward than they appear. Admittedly it doesnt change the time they are "missing" behind pole,
No one will know the full picture until tomorrow, and maybe not even then depending on reliability / accidents etc. But it has to be said, I dont think anyone can really change anything until China, Malaysia will surely be far too soon to get any parts even shipped /air freighted unless they are already ready I suppose.
The thing about Alonso 's time is, sure maybe Ferrari isnt as far back as they look (indeed he was 3rd or 4th when he went off, even if we dont have a realistic comparison to all the cars on the grid on the same tyres etc) but even so imagine fighting such a twitchy car for 70 laps , Alonso may well be a fantastic driver, but that car looks like a rattlesnake ready to strike around even the tamest corners.
I will be absolutely stunned if Ferrari could even make regular podiums this season without some freak results with that car, (compared to how solid and decent the front three or four teams are), because they are surely going to have to go RIGHT back to basics and start from the beginning again , well as much as they are permitted to do during the season.
Exstaticly happy for Williams, lets just hope it isnt just a flash in the pan and it is a fundamentally good car underneath (of course aided by the now Championship winning engine for the last two seasons). Even if /when ferrari recover William's place in the top ten are one 's being threatend (especially if Kimi can catch up with his team mate)
