Australian Grand Prix 2012, Albert Park Circuit - Race 1/20

As quick as Lotus and Mercedes were today, it'll be interesting to see if..

1. reliability is good and something doesn't get fubared like gearboxes
2. their pitstop teams can put super fast tyre changes together
3. their pitstop strategy is well thought out
4. they make a mistake and crash or skid out.

Much as we all want Hammy or Button to win, nothing would be more exciting than to see either Schumi, Rosberg, Grosjean or Kimi leading the pack. At least, for some of the race.
merc seems super reliable in testing.

they were one of the fastest teams at pitstops last year and used special wheel nuts than RBR have since copied.

there stratergy is probbaly going to rob them of a few places based on how poor they were at stratergy the last 2 years...

car seems well under control so i think a crash or mistake is unlikely

Hamilton's pole lap was his first flying lap so he was carrying more fuel than the others who went faster on their 2nd. As the McLaren aborted its second fast lap we don't know how fast it could have gone. The onboard shows that Lewis wasn't exactly pushing things that hard either, there were occasions when he was leaving yards of space between the car and the edge of the track.

There was definitely quite a bit more to come from the McLaren if needed.

Certainly seemed like they had a fair bit more pace.

maybe he wanted to look after his tyres a bit.

be interesting how it all shapes out tommorow , maybe the people saying mercedes had the best race simulation in barcelona werent speaking out of there arses :D

You know that Mercedes are the best team in terms of pitstops right? Well joint best with Red Bull

Hi guys,

Haven't said anything on this all day...

Excellent result for the mclarens :D (C'mon Jenson!)

Very pleased to see a mixed grid after last year's processional qualifying times... Nice to see RBR down there and having some head scratching to do and it's brilliant seen mercedes up there and Schumi almost in the driver's press conference.

Cannot wait for the race tommorow. I think it's going to be absolutely spectacular.

AS for the coverage on Sky, wow. I am impressed. The ad breaks aren't long either which is great... and it's brilliant how they're not on during the race and qually...

During practice I don't mind and I actually really like the short interludes they'll have when interviewing various people in the paddock and what not during practice.

Though it becomes obvious as to how much it would hurt if they did have ads on during the race as when we've come back from an ad break during practice the first thing we'll see is a driver being p1 who was previously p10 and we miss how he did it, or we'll see an instant replay of some sort of drama when it would have been nice to see the build up.

Anthony Davidson is excellent at his job, I love the technical analysis on the video screen.

May I just say... Crofty - where have you been on my Saturday afternoons!????

I almost *almost* got goosebumps during Q3 when he went into overdrive commenting on the drivers posting their fastest laps. His voice notched up a gear or three and he really handled it brilliantly.

I love (prefer too) having Brundle as the co-commentator... and I think the pair of them are a dream team for commentators of Formula 1. Brilliant.

Congrats Lewis, Jenson and Romain... great to see Lotus up there, a name steeped in such rich history deserve it.

Bring on tomorrow.

This. So soon in to the new season :(

I can hear Newey's photocopier from here!

people still need to work out where airs going and whats going on though.

im not even sure there slots in the front wing as there doesnt seem to be any way of air blowing out of them to stall the wing

I so want Sky but I don't think I'll be able to convince the missus, at least not for a while yet. How was the buildup show compared to the BBC's from last year? How long did it last, what sort of features did they have etc?

They will work it out quickly I reckon. Certainly gives another piece of the puzzle.

Right so Webber places his RB8 in front of Vettel but doesn't have KERS? I call BS myself and RBR are trying to save face on it all.

I didnt notice any KERS being used on Marks onboard cameras. Certainly interesting, I remember reading that Vettel benefited from the EBD much more than Webber did which could possibly explain the walk over last year was. And why Webber managed to beat him without kers today.

Or maybe seb is having an off day I dunno.

Far too early, I can watch the grid walk in the re-run ;)

There had better not be a first corner incident because my son will be up at 7.30 wanting to watch Cars 2 ;)

1) Button
2) Vettel
3) Hamilton

bit of a long shot, but I see something stupid robbing Hamilton of 1st, like a dodgy wheel change in the pits or something.
