Australian Grand Prix 2012, Albert Park Circuit - Race 1/20

It still sucks to hear that BBC are still flying everybody out there for a highlights show and having a commentary team sat there commentating on a TV feed for the canadians

Where exactly is the cost cutting for the BBC if they are still flying people out there, still commentating on the race, still doing the F1 forum etc... ?

The costs associated to the BBC are all still there. We were told this was done in the interests of budget cutting. Its balderdash.

Whereas they spent £20m on the rights to that new talent show, the voice

A lot of different countries piggyback off different countries commentary teams.

Australian tv used BBC commentary and are now using Sky for this year.

This is true.

Oddly though you'd expect Austrian state TV ORF to use the German RTL1 feed, but they have their own. Most Austrians switch to RTL though as ORF just have a single guy commentating, he has no-one to else talk to.

and Alonso was just a monster in the Ferrari

I've had this discussion with a mate of mine. Did Alonso really perform as well as everyone is saying? He finished 21 seconds back after only 17 laps of racing since the SC went in. His main rivals that we were expecting to see around him weren't there (MSc out, Kimi starting rather far back, Grojean out, Rosberg being a bit meh), and he also very nearly got beaten by a pay driver in a Williams.

Not saying he didn't do well in a car that looked terrible throughout practice and qualifying, but I think it was more a case of him capitalising on other people having bad luck than him making an outstanding drive.

And I don't know what it is about Adam Parr, but he creeps me out.

He looks and sounds like he should be a Tory mp or banker.

I will forever be a Williams supporter, and while it looks like the car has made a big improvement, behind the scenes its feeling emptier, probably with the departure/stepping down of Patrick Head, Sam Michael and of course Sir Frank himself. And the addition of Adam Parr, who is indeed very creepy indeed doesn't help.

I think the reason he doesn't fill me with excitement is probably because unlike other team principals/heads, he doesn't have a racing or engineering background. IIRC he's from a corporate/banking/consultancy background, so he's very much a businessman. Maybe one of these 'business' orientated decisions was to stick with Maldonado for the Venezuelan cash rather than opt for someone else and alternative sponsorship...

merc are seriously disapointing..

aparently msc had a dodgy gearbox for quite a few laps and he claimed to be saving tyres anyway so maybe his real race pace wasnt represented so early on.

i reckon he could have kept 5th place but not fast enough to challenge merc and rbr

doesn't it cost them to show the race live? thats where most of the cost comes from i think?

Yes it's the £40 odd million the BBC were paying Bernie every year to show the races where they're saving the money!

Good point

Hadn't thought of the fact that you have to pay for the priviledge of showing the race live don't you

Raises the question though, who pays for canada to watch the race then ? the network in Canada broadcasting it i presume ?

Yeah it was a real disapointment. I was looking forward to seeing where Merc were over a race distance. I would say MSc would have easily had Alonso covered, so 5th was the least he could have got.

I feel your pain, I had BBC as my homepage.....idiots

Sorry but they are the idiots, because they report up to date news and you have it as your homepage??

Er ok :p

I think he done as much as he could. People have said kimi did a good job, he really didn't. He was miles behind his team mate in qually and made up as many places as Alonso did through others errors and misfortunes.

All we can judge alonso on really is his team mate and I don't think any team mate got more of a butt whipping than Alonsos? He started very well and did just about all he could I think in a car that looks like it's about to swap ends at any time.

The thing I like about Alonso is even though people say he throws his toys out the pram, he doesn't critise the team, he just gets on with it. Despite his barren years he would have cause to have whinged at Renault and at Ferrari but he doesn't. He might in private but publicly he makes sure to say all the right things and get on with driving a dog to the best of his ability, consistently. Sending all the right messages to the guys whose hard work he will have to rely on.

Yeah nobody can deny he did well with the tools he had, I just think his performance was flattered a bit by other peoples misfortunes.

While I might revel in Ferrari's misery for a little while, for the 'show' I hope they sort stuff out quickly. A 4 team fight at the front is always better than a 3 or 2 team fight, regardless of your allegiances.

Ferrari seemed to be much more manageable on heavy fuel compared to later in the race I thought.

I would appear the rest of the season will be a McLaren and Red Bull fight with everyone else picking up scraps.

Maldonado has no reason to be in a F1 car I say. Was the cause of a couple of retirements as well as crashing himself. Money talks these days.

It is but I think it could really hurt Mclarens chances of a drivers title if they get involved in a battle with Ferrari and Red bull. Both those teams are effectively one driver teams. The points could make it so close this year that Lewis or Jenson lose a title because their team mate wins 2 or 3 races ahead of them, while Massa and Webber enjoy the scenery. :D

I'd like one of the Mclaren drivers to lift it this year and I'm already nervous about them taking points off each other, especially if it meant Vettel gets another :D

Maldonado is a menace and should have got a proper punishment when he deliberately smashed into Hamilton, seems to cause accidents far too often.

But he brings a sack load of Venezuelan moolah which pays for Alan B'stards hair grease so looks like he's here to stay :p
