Are you optimistic about the future of the human race or pessimistic?

We pretty much do. Disease of the earth.

how so?
we've changed the planet far less than many other species, and we are far less populous than most species.

people who say people are a virus on the planet etc are just self important, we're actually quite insignificant.

I'm an optimistic realist, hope for the best but expect the worst! :D

Overall I think that the good of humanity outweighs the bad and that there is much to celebrate about being alive and well. Could things be better? Yes, of course, but they could also be a lot worse.

Yeah, it's dem pesky koala bears sticking holes in the ozone layer and destroying entire species/habitats.

POLL !!

Pessimistic if I'm honest.
All the technology in the world wont help us to be a "better person"
We are nothing but locusts raping the planet of it's resources until there's nothing left.

If anything I don't think it'll be "us" travelling to the stars beyond, but something we create...

now that we are above evolution the slow de-evolution of the human race will happen, people who have no drive passion etc will breed and pass their lacklustre outlook on life onto the offspring. the hard working intelligent people of the world will work like crazy and die before reproducing.

so pessimistic.

unless we manage to implement birth licences for hard working stable intelligent people who contribute.

also religion has run its course and needs to be put to bed. we need a "police" force to install fear into the populous that has enough power to make people behave in fear of dis-proportionate punishment.

we could make hell happen for real, and have tangible evidence unlike religions.

Very optimistic, look at the past and one thing stands out. We always survive and prosper, we engineer outer way out of problems and I see no reason why any of the modern day doomsday/scaremongerers are ny different to the historical ones.

Yeah, it's dem pesky koala bears sticking holes in the ozone layer and destroying entire species/habitats.

Well if it wasn't for those pesky photosynthetic organisms filling the atmosphere with so much poison gas they wiped out many of the previous inhabitants and froze the planet to a degree and duration that makes even the worst case ice age from human global warming look mild we'd have never have existed.

Just because we might be changing the conditions to be less favourable for us, doesn't mean we're new or special, thinking we can destroy the planet or wipe out all life on earth is silly. We're not even close to that kind of power.

I try not to think about the future too much, but I guess I'm a bit of both. We're going to crumble as a society eventually, I don't doubt it. But I'm excited about how we'll cope after. We'll do *** again, but do it better!

Edit: not sure why the stars... We'll do IT again...

Pessimistic. I see our science stagnating. Continued kicking the can down the road with lots of our problems. The environment is being decimated. Many resources used up. Populations will crash within our lifetimes.

Lots of problems cannot be solved by science alone, and even if some can their isnt the adequate investment or its all focused on immediate profit based short term technology.

I'm sure populations will survive but they will not be in a good state. We will likely never reach the stars, or go beyond our solar system. That would require a monumental cooperative activity, with no return on profit. Either way we likely wont have the resources left by the time we have the will.

Much more likely that you don't follow science and don't follow environmental legislation and plans.

Science can save us all.

When we work out a cheap unlimited power supply, we will be able to solve all kinds of problems.

Then we can all live in the desert and use the free power to run outdoor air-conditioners.

Actually I do, and thats why I'm pessimistic.

I don't see how you can and still be pessimistic.
There is so much environmental plans that have been started and tightening up on. Read up on river pollution in EU, hen look at co2 and enery road map for EU.
Then look at technology NASA N+3 and N+4 for commercial aircraft, EV for road vehicles.

The battery, gas, air and other Grid energy storage.
renewable energy resources from solar to tidal and everything in between.

The huge saving from energy effecient again in the EU 2020 and 2050 road map. Things are so much more effecient than a decade or two ago.

Look at VASMiR for rocket engine breakthroughs, being tested on ISS in 2013.

So much technology it's stupendulsly good.

It's not that scientific progression is slowing or getting any less exiting, it's more that environmental legislation doesn't do anything. We need to be decreasing emissions dramatically, this is a well known fact. For all our efforts, what have we achieved so far? Well, not only are the emissions increasing, but they're increasing exponentially.

To be frank the best thing we can really hope for in terms of environmental concerns is for the oil to run out before we reach the 'end of days' tipping point.

And how long have we been trying for?
Renewable energy, energy efficiency and EV will have a mass impact of emmision in the coming 3 decades.

Then look at river poultice with life finally returning to several rivers and EU tightening the regulations even more.

Well according to the IPCC even if our emissions dropped to zero tomorrow we're still ****ed anyway, so why bother?

why not ramp them up while we can to increase production to prepare?

Get rid of religion and we stand a chance which i'd be optimistic about because humans by their nature are incredibly curious and good at finding ways of making things better etc.

Until then there's too many nut jobs killing kids and stuff in the name of god/allah/whoever. And some of these nut jobs are able to get hold of nuclear weapons i bet so hmmmm.... pessimistic.

Athiest signingout lol.

pessimistic. I see nothing but wars, overpopulation and insufficient resources. As many have said, we really have raped this planet.
