SETI@Home & OcUk Projects News Vol. 170 4th March - 10th March 2012

Grtz Derv.

On another note, I have just stuck my 990x in my pc, replacing my old I7 920, now I have noticed that the more cpu units i run there more my gpu usage decreases, where as before i could run all cpus full bore with no detremental effects to the gpu, is there any way to solve this?

This is how its been for a while using multi GPU's or multi WU's per GPU on 400 series or above cards. You must just have been lucky with your old rig.

The easiest way around it is to use some thing like 'PriFinitty 64 BETA' ( other prorgrams are available ;) ) to set the affinity for GPU usage to a single core and have the remaining cores set to use CPU. I've got this running on both rigs and the loss of a CPU core is more than made up for by the GPU's being able to run flat out all the time.

Some news:
I'm gonna be going GPU aided soon. Looking at the 560Ti Superclocked Deal here at OCUK, and it's quite honestly looking tempting. Seeing as the 660 I've been looking at has been promoted to a 680 and has had £150 added to the price, I think this 560Ti will do my crunching (and gaming) jobs well. Opinions?

Can you give some pointers on how to set this up? I had a play around and gave the GPUs their own CPU core and dropped the same core on the CPU units. It didn't seem to make any difference other than dropping usage on one core. GPUs were still milling about on around 75% usage.

Rotten blinking week :)

Started out last thursday with a nice shiny new rampage 4 extreme and 3930k et memory etc.

My first TBag moment was realising i did not have the 2011 hf adapter kit, problemo solved ordered one day for a few squid and received the next for £14 .... bargain :)

Set about putting it all together and what do you know .... a certain someone who shall remain nameless sent me the wrong kit :mad: Blood pressure started building.

In a rare moment of genius i remembered where i could get a few washers and the like to bridge the space on cpu block ...... goes tearing into dark dungin for ages old vhs recorder and whips out the mounting mechanism ta daaaa it worked a treat :D

Hooked up the gubbins had windows disk in the drive and i knew the r4 would set it to ahci by default so no need to go messing with the bios just yet. Windows installed fine and was doing updates which i thought might cure the only 8gb of 16gb ram visible. Restarted press delete to enter bios nad ... no way ... arrrrrrghhh bashed an xbox ranted for a few minutes and just kept trying but alas no luck whatsoever something creepy had happenned to the bios.

Boxed it all up courier picked it up tuesday morning the supplier received it back yesterday and am sat waiting on a king size refund to hit me paypal.
Now normally it wouldnt have bothered me but i went back to what Mr Area51 had said about "getting of ones arse" and i thought dammit man i do!!!! everything i have done has been geared towards seti, ok a few guilty pleasures of late and an abyssmal output but that will change.

So a long awkward week and unless someone would like to do the news this week i am really not upto it chaps, normal service will be resumed next week if i haven't been sent to coventry etc. :(

Which leaves me with old faithfull Rampage 3 extreme and an i7 920 someone was kind enough to sell me because i begged :o.

Do i keep ye old faithfull and feast on kepler or what? I really aint fussed either way so will leave it upto you guys to decide ..... am gonna do nowt all weekend except peddle me last few bits n pieces and drink lots of coffee.

Thanks for understanding chaps .... i'm scared to even look at the new gpus :D

Damn, sounds like you've had a frustrating time of late Toxic :(

I'll do the news for you tomorrow once I get back from my job induction :)

Ah, didn't realise someone had already offered to cover the news this week :). Don't want to step on derv's toes so I'll stand aside.

Derv, if you need any help sorting the news out I'm happy to provide assistance!

If you are talking about the GTX 680 as "Kepler" then it might do to wait a bit, could be its GPGPU performance may not be up to scratch.

Well I've ordered one to test, should be here tommorow.

Like you Mr Biffa sah I to intend on testing the 680 - mine is set for delivery before 10am :p

Will test with a few units of FAH and post results.

Bearing in mind my 560 ti's (448 cores) were capable of 16k each oc'd - all three of which have now been sent to new homes.

Nice! Not sure when mine will arrive, it was shipped at 11:45pm

Re the scores, that must depend on the WU right? My 470's are pushing 19K on the P80xx units. Normally around 14K on a regular WU.

Hopefully I can do some tests on Seti and Milkyway and Collatz if the clients run

Yeah,

Standard units were netting 16k

From what I've read (past hour) FAH won't run on the 680's yet - so i'll have to see what the achieve with seti (and maybe milkyway).

Very nice....

Mine arrived too - box is huge.

No time to install now - off to gym, then work.

Let us know how you get on Biffa.

:D Very interested to hear your thoughts on the new 680's you lucky so and so's though i will probably take the plunge this weekend it would be good to see some results first ..... gets coffee and makes meself comfortable in anticipation :D

Got my 680 just after lunch today :)

It is the EVGA version so managed to download their overclocking program and have done a mild-overclock on it.

Seems to do a small Seti GPU WU in around 1m 51s and the longer GPU WU's in 6m 55s

GPU temp. hovering around 79 degrees with fan speed at 57% (at which point it is audible)

GPUGRID does not currently support the 680
