I would at least talk to your dentist. I think it's been reeled back a bit, but there were so many clinics around offering it, but were not providing it in a legam manner i.e. using solutions/preparations which greatly exceeded the legal dosage of the active ingredients. Just be sensible about it and you probably won't end up with glow in the dark teeth :)
 
You could use the Crest strips, but if you want something stronger, then go with the Day White ACP stuff off eBay or online (highest percentage). Very strong stuff, but works brilliantly. It even states it's for dentists only on the back.
 
My housemate spent a few hundred quid having his gnashers done. He said it hurt like hell and to be honest I couldn't tell the difference...

Dilute some domestos then dab it on your teeth gently with a bit of tissue paper - works a treat....

The Crest strips definitely work. You can see results in 3 days, I was very surprised. I believe these are all imported in from the US as they are not in any of the big stores.

They are great for making your teeth look whiter, but if you want the unnatural hollywood look then a dentist is your best bet.
