Game closing stores NOW.

On the rare occasion I have to venture into "Game" it's such an unpleasant experience, waiting in that queue for a good 20 minutes when there are only 4-5 people in front of you, as the procedures of having to go upstairs to retrieve the game you want, the guy then proceeds to talk to you as if you're interested in whether he has every game in the world or not, apparently his only social outlet.

Not surprised they're closing down :D

Edinburgh is closing, or already, has might pop along to see if i can pick some free stuff up. I dont own a console, maybe they have some leftover PC games. Can pick my brother up some stuff though perhaps.

Ocean Terminal and Princes St closed but still stores at Fort Kinnaird, The Gyle, St James and Cameron Toll. All the stock is getting boxed up and shipped to the stores staying open.

It seems to me that administration has all but guaranteed we'll see at least a slimmed down Game/Gamestation on the streets, as painful as it is the drastic closing of stores is what's been needed for a long time.
If Gamestop, OpCapita or Walmart don't take over the remaining UK business the banks that are owed a fortune will, there isn't any reason why a sensibly run GAME with much fewer stores can't remain profitable once its freed from half of its stores!

Seems they still have no idea how to run a business. Close down both central Edinburgh stores but leave game and gamestation in Livingston intact, when they are a 30 sec walk from each other. Couldn't make it up. Ocean terminal branch has been cut which is fair enough, not the most successful shopping centre. Makes sense that the Gyle store remains in place.

All stock could be found cheaper online, no surprise whatsoever.

All stock in Sainsburys can be found cheaper online as well, ditto Carphone Warehouse, Waterstones, infact name pretty much any high street retailer and you can buy the products cheaper online.

But the fact is millions of people do not buy it cheaper online instead, which is why Sainsburys are not filing for administration and neither are CarphoneWarehouse.

The two high rent ones in Liverpool CC gone, apart from L1 shopping centre, usually the first to go when companies are without a paddle.

yeh but food shopping is so hard online! You just cant judge the weight or quantities of things easily. Iv still not got a good size for cheese yet. its either a massive wheel of the stuff or a tiny stick.

I think this was inevitable what with the likes of Steam. I'm glad they're gone - Digital Distribution is the future.

Gamestation will be next I imagine... (Although aren't they part of the Game company? I might be mistaken, not sure...)

The consumer is sleep walking into a digital distribution disaster.

You don't own any of your games - and if Steam/Origin/Whatever want to, they can turn them off. If EA went bust, you lose everything. If Origin is down, you can't play. And all for the same price as the product was on the high street for new releases...

The demise of Game is pretty much unrelated to Steam though - PC games made up a tiny fraction of the sales made. It was all about consoles - and Steam doesn't do Console Games (Yet?).

Hmm I can't believe I've not thought about it like that - Quite a scary thought that if Valve were to go bust, everyone would lose all their items...

But I've got so many of my games on Valve now, the simplicity of buying/downloading, and having them all in one place is perfect. Like you say though, the price you pay isn't to have the game forever... Then again, do I want a game forever? Probably not...

monaghan closing to no other game retailers around for 30 or more miles  , need to spend my gamecard points if it is still possible .

You have no choice through steam, you cant sell it on 2nd hand :p

I didn't mean that I didn't want it forever and that I'd just sell it on. I meant would I be bothered if a game was only in my games library for 50 years for example - I wouldn't be too bothered if that was the case...

There is a Game and a Gamestation in Oldham but neither are closing? Madness, close one keep the other.

That's nothing. In Telford town centre there are two Game stores about a minute's walk from one another, and a Gamestation a matter of about 10 seconds walk away from the second Game... I never understood why...

It's a shame about the loss of jobs, it really is. One of the Game stores here had some pretty decent staff. As for the company itself? Good.

As for the Steam issue, I'm sure I read somewhere that Gabe Newell said if Valve ever had problems (I don't see that happening any time soon, though...) all the games would be made available, so you wouldn't lose anything already purchased. There are other digital distribution platforms besides Steam, though. Use those. GamersGate is pretty good. Let's not forget Amazon and the like. Steam isn't suddenly going to swallow up all the competition because Game is gone. The very thought is laughable. Game's been failing horribly for years. The place was a ghost town every time I walked past.

Same here, maybe 1 or two people in either game / gamestation. RARELY a few more on a weekend.
