I'm considering the unthinkable - going from a 7970 to 680...

Well at £100 I think you're right, its not worth it. But people do like to spend money on their hobbies... Its thousands of pounds on fishing gear for some, or golf clubs for others... /shrug

The OP asked if he was Mad. I say yes but it is his money and if he wants to get the faster card, it is his choice.

Good on ya BS Dave. Come to the Green side.

swapping for a 680 could hardly be considered showing off when there are people on the forums that have 3x7970s eyefinity etc. i just feel a little bit STUPID as i knew the 680gtx woUld probably be quicker than the 7970 i just thought it would be a lot more expensive.

tbh honest i think i'm just airing a little uncertainty that i'm sure some other 7970 owners have as well

Some people have shown it by creating long threads showing how good their 7970s are, i have decided to just see if people thought it would be worth swapping.

Lots of people have done it in previous generations

Raven 5870 - 480gtx...
Opethdeciple (sorry dude i know i've spelt your name wrong) - created a massive long thread about whether he should keep his 5870 2gb or swap it...

I have my expensive graphics card, you have your expensive graphics card and ipad...

Leave the bloke alone! Like he said he doesn't have any expensive habits and he is TALKING about having kids! He is clearly just having some doubts about having made the right choice because it just that, a VERY expensive GPU and if I splashed that on one and thought i MAY have made a mistake then I might look for some advice in terms of other real world users experiences rather than benchmarks.

Oh wait that's the whole point of these forums! :)

Do it.
You will get everything that u get on 7970 + additional speed + quieter + less Wattage + decent set of drivers.

Close the door behind you on the way out!

Andy's gave the best suggestion yet.

A card that comes out 3 months later that just pulls ahead of the op's stock 7970 out the box isn't that fantastic.

Your sig tells me that even if the 680 was slightly slower you would still advise the op to change cards just the same.

Hey I went 480 gtx sli to a 7970, back too 480 gtx sli:).

Do what ever makes you feel happy, it's your money after all!

I mainly play bf3 and bought a vtx3d 7970 in February for it, but sent it back under dsr having felt slightly underwhelmed and hoping something better would come along. I'm glad I did.

If I was in your position though (and I very nearly was), I would just stick with it as it's not really worth the outlay. The 7970 is still a fantastic card. I might however be tempted to change if it was a poor clocker, which in addition, was another reason why I sent my 7970 back and decided to wait.

^^^

Charity starts at home with a 7970 busting 680gtx! :-)

Haha. And what an appropriate username for your comment.

Yeah, and he got quite a bit stick for it too. (Though more for his aboutface in fanboyism than the actual change itself).

The 5870>480 route gave some gains, not much but they were there.

1.2GHz 7970>oc'd 680 I don't think there will be any gains at all with those clocks.

Considering vortez's review was a 680 against a 1GHz 7970 and not the op's 1.2GHz, I think most that don't have any brand loyalty would have to agree, there really isn't much(if any) in it!

'NVIDIA have enjoyed at least a couple of years of victory after victory, for the most part outpacing their AMD/ATI counterparts. While we have shown today's sample to be much the same, the performance gap is much smaller than it once had been. Were it not for a nagging thought in my sub conscious I would have absolutely no hesitation in proclaiming the GTX680 to be without a shadow of a doubt the single best graphics card on the planet. That nagging thought has plagued me throughout this review - the GTX680 could have been so much more.'

God u lot have been jumping on loads of threads recently simply put no one cares if they do they would ask, maybe he recycles, donates to charity, helps charity any of u know or ask that? But frankly who cares this isn't general chat it's the graphic card forum......

Exactly people come here for advice an guidance so give it not mindless pointless critisising of the op

I agree completly to this, from reading this forum and the threads on these two cards as long as you are not blinded by being a fan boy u can quite clearly see there is no difference at all in the cards the best way it seems to me to choose what card u want to buy is by looking at what games you play and choose the one which is slightly better because both are slightly better than the other in certain games.

Finally, a review that gives out 680 max oc V 7970 max oc!

£100 cost of swaping cards gets you.... well nothing tbph, unless of course you have a robotic eye with an fps counter in it.

I'm actually considering the exact same thing. I have two VTX3D 7970's that I purchased from OCUK. I'm close to walking in to a shop today to get some new cards and then selling these ones off at a loss.

I'm tired of ATI's BS with their drivers tbh, particularly when it comes to crossfire.

Which has been the case since two days after the launch of the 680.

Both dead level, as usual.

But you can't tell any one Tommy. They need to declare a real winner so they can be sure of which card to buy. They won't buy one unless they can strut around like a peanut shouting from the rooftops about having the fastest GPU on the market.

Let's face it. That is why people buy these cards. They don't buy them for any other reason than it giving them something to boast about. Something they can walk around a forum and keep saying "I've got the best".

Some people seem to desperately need that self gratification. Those will be the ones replacing their Ferrari with, well, a Ferrari.

Stupidity knows no bounds.
