If you found a phone...

So the consensus in this thread is that everyone here is holier than thou and would return the phone otherwise its theft.

On this basis if you all saw a £20 note blowing down the street you would all hand it into the nearest police station. Right?

I would 100% return a phone if I found one. For starters I wouldn't be able to handle the guilt that I'd feel, knowing that I have something that belongs to someone else, something they will probably be looking for or worrying about, plus I have my own phone and I'm not a total scumbag. If I found it on the street I'd turn it in to the police, if I found it in a pub, club, restaurant or similar I'd just hand it over to a member of staff. People who would actually keep something of somebody else's when they could just as easily do the right thing are total idiots.

Of course, I'd hand it straight into Gill bridge..

A lot easier to track down the owner of a phone than it would be to find out who dropped some money.

It's a completely different scenario, you can easily find the owner of a phone.

It's not holier than thou, it's normal decent behaviour.

Chance of reuniting £20 with its rightful owner versus the chance of reuniting the phone...

If you write your name and telephone number on all your notes then I'll return them to you should I find one :p

A) It's near enough impossible to find the original owner of loose money. Therefore, handing it into the police would likely see it sit there for a while to cover the law and then be pumped into the public sector.

B) Nobody goes to the police saying "Oh, I lost a tenner today, has a tenner been handed in ?"

Taxi drivers are the worst for keeping phones.

But that's beside the point. Personally I'd return it, and would pray anyone who found mine would do the same. Unfortunately where I'm from it's likely to be found by a chav.

I've left my phone in a taxi before, as has my friend. Both times, we called it, spoke to the taxi driver and said we're happy to pay whatever the fare is for him to return to us with the phone. That seemed to be the best way to do it, it was my fault I misplaced it and there's no reason he should be out of pocket for my silliness.

Why do you feel that they are so bad?

Ive lost numerous phones and cameras and never had them returned. At least two phones were dropped in a taxi, I called the next day and nothing had been handed in. Phones all turned off by morning.

I would like to think I would hand it in, whether I did or not is a different thing

When you see not taking valuable items easily returned to the owner as being "holier than thou", you are saying a lot about yourself.

No, but if I found a wallet containing ID and a £20 note I'd hand it in to the nearest police station. Although in practice I wouldn't know what was in it because I'd hand it in unopened. A £20 note in the street by itself? How could that be returned to its owner?

I've handed in cash I've found in a building, because in that case there's a fair chance the person who lost it will come back for it.

Of course and did the very same thing today, in a resturant and found a new iPhone under a menu in the waiting bar. We spoke to the staff, found out who was waiting there previously and phone was returned to them. Really couldn't consider being a thieving scumbag.

For reasons outlined above, I would just hand it into lost property or into the police station. I wouldn't expend any effort to find out who it belongs to such as looking through the contacts.
