New Crucial M4 Firmware (11/4/2012) Version 000F (newer than 0309)

I have got to say, I am VERY impressed with Crucial moving so quickly on these firmware updates. Fair enough the last one was to fix a count-down-to-death bug but this one less so.

I wouldn't be buying any other drive right now, Crucial are so on the ball.

edit: Just successfully ran the windows updater exe in Windows 8, on my Macbook Pro, and it all worked fine. Top quality *thumbs up*

I have been advised to get one of these and i am just wondering what the write speed is now. My main concern is on the ocuk site, i see the write speed is much slower than comparable drives. The read spead looks to be among the best.

Take a read of this..

If you're copying big files to the drive then you'll notice the lower write speed. Since Windows generally just saves small files, you're unlikely to notice the lower write speeds.

That thread is a good roundup of many SSD's.

Just updated using the Windows 7 Updater Application, couldn't have been easier.

Just make sure you run the exe from the ssd itself, didn't work when I ran it from my storage drive where the file was originally saved to.
That might explain why I had a boot failure when I tried to update to 0309 using the Windows method?

Just done mine, was nice and easy :)

Mine was saved to my storage drive and I had no problems :)

Windows updater fails for me with a boot error, will try a USB stick later.

EDIT: Problem solved, it appears that it cannot cope with running from the desktop (as per the manual) if your desktop is stored on a different drive, running the utility from the root of my c: drive worked perfectly.

Having an odd problem then using the Windows updater.

The updater app fails to load on reboot and instead I get a "Windows failed to start" error, followed by a message telling me that grldr.mbr is missing or corrupt.

Got no problems booting normally, just when trying to run the updater. Not found a great deal of information linking this error an the Crucial updater...

Write speed wont have changed much. however a lot (not all) SSDs use compression to increase their write speeds and they always quote the best possible speeds. However if what you're writing to the SSD isn't highly compressible then you wont see the ~500MB/s figures drives like to quote (as I understand it).

Also, can I ask what you'll be reading from that has read speeds so much faster than the M4's write speeds (I believe the larger drives have a faster write speed than the 64GB drive)? And how often will you be writing large amounts of data to the SSD?

Also, thanks to the OP for pointing this out. I wasn't expecting any more firmwares until another big problem had been scaring the forum community.

You probably have your mbr located on your mechanical drive or something like that.

Ummmm... having second thoughts now. I've read stuff about drives/partitions being marked as active.

Maybe if I post this screenshot, some kind soul might be able to shed some light ;)

Just the boot code ends up in the wrong place that's why it fails to boot in the updater.
