I am building a new PC and have bought the Gigabyte UD5H bundled with the 620 Kuhler and was thinking of replacing the stock fan with 2 in push-pull.

There are several on sale ATM and wondered which you all would recommend between the Scythe Gentle Typhoon 120mm 1450 RPM or 1850 RPM or do I need 4 Pin PWM fans like Akasa AK-FN057 Apache Super Silent for this board? Or is there another fan that is better suited to this application?

I plan to overclock either a 3770k or 2700k (depending on overall performance and overclockability of the 3770k when we get more retail unit reviews). I want the PC to be quiet (but not necessarily silent) so will compromise cooling for excessive noise even if it means a couple hundred Mhz drop in the OC.

I know the 620 may not be the best for overclocking but in reviews it seems to keep up with some of the big heatsinks and was free so I dont mind spending another £25 on fans.

Being a PWM fan your motherboards cpu fan header will be able to speed control the apache, or two of them in push/pull with a PWM splitter cable.

That sounds like what I am after but how would they compare to the Scythe as far as noise and cooling. I am having trouble finding a direct comparison. I guess as the Scythe are not PWM I would have to have a controller or run them at full speed all the time?

I have a kuhler 620 and use 2 scythe gentle typhoon 1850's.

They are only 3 pin so no Pwm control. I found the wires to be only 10cm long so it was difficult for me to run these to my front mounted fan controller. What I ended up doing was purchasing a Lian li fan controller which is basically a simple rheostat which you control with a single knob on the back of the case. It works like a charm...

My only comment is that I am not sure 1850 is necessary. Yes they work and very well but at full whack they do make some noise, not loads but noticeable so you will want to run them slower. I am running them at roughly 1/3rd speed and find the peak difference in cooling is only about 5 degrees as measured with hwmonitor. Sub 50 degree core temp on a 1090t over clocked to 4.0ghz I find to be acceptable and the cooler temp is not worth the extra noise for me.

Hope this helps. In hindsight I would have gone with the 1450's. Only 400 rpm slower but very cool still and quiet.

Last thing. You'll need an extra set of long screws for the push side of the 620 fan otherwise you won't be able to attach the fan. I found it nearly impossible to thread a small screw through due to the design of the scythe fans!

Chris.

I do have a Zalman Rheostat controller floating around somewhere but I really wanted the automatic control of pwm fans. Hell it's only £7.99 for the Apache's this week, maybe I should buy them and see what happens, I can always use them as case fans later and buy the scythes if I find they aren't good enough.

there is little or no noticable difference between the typhoons and the apaches. i have the apaches because they give better static pressure, noise wise the apaches are the same as the typhoons but the typhoons have a different noise pitch which some ppl have mentioned is more audible than the apaches

Hmm i thought the Typhoons were supposed to have better static pressure, if that isnt the case then the apaches are the ones I want anyway.

I have decided on the Apaches as they are cheap enough that if they aren't suitable I can use them as case fans. Thanks for all your help guys.
