If you found £20 in a cash machine........

C: Other

Cash machine should take the money back after a period of time

Aparently they do, i found cash in one, many years ago, was odd to see machine beeping, and no one in range, there was absolutely no one walking away from the machine. Machine was attached to a bank, carried the money inside and gave it to the banker.

Probably just consider it 'my lucky day' and take it.

Of course if I saw someone in the vicinity putting something back in their pocket/handbag I'd give it to them.

I'd let the individual know they've forgotten it, providing I've seen who it is that left it of course.

If just strolling past and saw it, I'd take it. If it's not me it'd be some other person doing it anyway.

Where exactly would you hand it in? I don't know of anywhere that operates a lost property scheme for missing cash.

If it was a atm outside a bank you might consider handing it to someone inside, noway if it was a supermarket or anything like that though.

Very simply, if the person who withdrew the money is not around, keep it. They should ALWAYS check to make sure they have taken their money. Why did they even use the ATM in the first place? Besides checking their balance.

I would wait and make sure some other scummer did not come nick it prior to the machine taking it back.

Best way to give it back to owner is let the machine suck it and re-credit their account directly.

Anything other than the above is blatant theft no matter what excuses about the difficulties of finding the owner you make up.

STEAL STEAL STEAL!

Very simply, if someone left their phone behind, keep it. They should ALWAYS check to make sure they haven't left their phone.

etc

I have done this, and I looked around for the person who I rememered had just walked away from the cash point. I was BROKE and really wanted them to be jumping in their car to drive off so I could take it without feeling guilty but they were walking in to a barber's shop so I followed them in and gave it back.

I later had a surprise orgy with several hundred underwear models. Karma.

Wow yeah, there must be a gap in the market for one!

Odds are it would be impossible to find out who it belonged to and return it to them, so I would keep it.

The real debate is what would I spend it on. £20 worth of goodies at American Soda? Quick trip to the cinema? Nice lunch at reteraunt? Decisions decisions...

if it was in my way i'd take it and keep it, just because im too lazy to hand it in and even think about handing it in..

im so lazy i frequently don't bother to collect change from tesco self service if its not much over a quid.. or some times I'll give it a grab and anything that's left does not get a second attempt... anything finding its way to the floor stays there...

(not rich just lazy)

** missed the bit about it being a cash machine, id probably wait 2 or 3 seconds for it to be taken back, anything longer is just wasting my time so id take it ..... if i was in a rush I might even jsut leave it on the machine after I took it out the slot.... not my issue if the machines are too slow...

dam automatic doors do my head in... why do they open so SLOW!!!!!

It's already been said in the thread that the right thing to do is stand for a minute and wait for the machine to take it back in. The bank will sort out a refund for whoever it was.

To those folks who are smacking their lips at the free money and saying the other person deserves to lose it..

What if you were down on your luck, you were ill, you couldn't take time off your minimum wage job because they wouldn't pay you, you had kids to look after, bills to pay. In this climate your real income has gone down considerably compared to bills going up. You've got a stack of things to do and you know you need to go to the bank to lift £20 so you can buy nappies. You go to the bank and you leave the £20 in the machine.

Do you really think that person 'deserves' to lose their £20?

Some guy used the cash machine outside a Barclay's and walked off. I stepped up to the ATM and out pop's a load of notes. I assumed there was around £200 and took the money and walked in the direction the guy had gone. Came up to the corner and he was gone, decided to walk inside the bank and there he was. Gave him the money, which he was quite thankful for,and went on with my business.

I don't know what I would have done with the money if I couldn't f find him, probably hand the money in at the bank.
