How do you pull your handbrake up?

My god! your all wrong!

Apply the foot brake, then apply the handbrake if you really give a damn about doing it properly.
Actually that'll only help the cars thats handbrake mechanism also works the same mechanism as the foot brake uses, but that is how most car user manuals will tell you how to do it.
I've once seen a dodgy ratchet, and it was on a corsa surprise surprise.

Given that applying my "handbrake" applies the brakes if I'm moving anyway, this point is moot.

So no, I'm not "wrong".

The way MOT inspectors apply the handbrake ... cliickkk.

If I'm parked in the driveway or at work, I don't use the handbrake, I just stick it in gear.

My GF always tells me off for using the ratchet in her car cos she thinks I'm wearing it out. For some reason I've subconsciously stopped putting her handbreak on. I can't win.

I don't press the button pulling it up, no. It's a normal ratchet, it won't wear out any time soon :) My car will hold on all but the steepest of hills on one click anyway.

Sometimes ill press the button and yank then there are times where i wont and ill ratchet it up. Which usually annoys the missus to no end:p

I do hard and fast. So hard ive ripped the hand brake off the chassis twice. Not trolling it was a 3dr hyundi pony 1.3l engine with even smaller wheels.

From my brief time as a mechanic the most common damage was either the button itself breaking or the cables stretching because of yanking it up with the button in. The other issue was a bf/husband putting the handbrake on and the wife/gf being unable to release it.

Finger(s) underneath and raise.

Thats exactly what I do! Tried pulling the switch in my A4 whilst moving the other day and the dashboard told me off!

On next week's episode of 'Motors - An Overclockers Story' we find out if it's better to open your door with one hand on the lever and the other on the handle or just pull with one hand and push the door open with your elbows.

Riveting drama is forecast!
