I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for the best house alarm system, I'm preferably looking at one which is monitored.

I was about to book an appointment with ADT but have just read some bad reviews for them online and was hoping some users here might have had experience with them or another company which they could recommend.

Don't bother with ADT, we had them around for a quote and the guy that came out was useless. Despite us not committing to anything, we then received paperwork confirming our installation was to go ahead, and then when we tried to cancel they asked us to pay a fee for the visit that he did because it wasn't a normal sale, because there was already an old ADT system in the house but it had been disconnected and all the wires had been taken out by the previous owner. Eventually we managed to deal with the situation, but it took a few weeks and they were not helpful at all. I'd look at local alarm companies, most offer options similar to ADT :)

If I was to install an alarm, I'd want one that could alert my mobile and then create a video feed to my house. I expect the tech exists for an enthusiast to create this themselves.

The one alarm I'm aware of is the DSC Alexor Wireless Alarm system, which can be a DIY install, but I have not researched the whole market thoroughly.

I'd reccomend getting a local NSI or BSIA approved firm to come out and survey your property.
ADT and most other nationals don't really give a hoot about small domestic intruder alarms. (well the salesmen don't, they just want the big projects for their commission)

Have you decided over wired or wireless installations, Wired are the better option but you will pay for labour costs and the upheaval of the property, whereas wireless (which has come on leaps and bounds, but still a little flakey sometimes) can be fitted usually cheaper due to the ease of installation, however there are ongoing costs of batteries every 2-3 years in each wireless device (most are of the CR123A battery type) and depending on manufacturer, some take 1 or 2 batteries.
Or you can go for a Hybrid solution, which means the external SAB (bell) keypad and internal sounder are usually wired and the detection devices are wireless and wired.

Honeywell Galaxy or flex series are my prefered panels, however, RISCO, Scantronic and Menvier all have good panels. Just none really beat the Honeywell panels in terms of functions or ease of use.

If you need any help on any deciding factors give me a shout.

In my last house I used a company called briars not sure if it was just local, they used a scantronic system. I opted for wired and my neighbour wireless and neither of us in the 5 years I was there had a problem with either system.

Not only would it be cheaper in the long run than a dog you dont have to turn into one of those ****s that talk to their dog like a human and your house won't smell of dog.

Are you an installer? (I'm just curious). :)
