Anybody else thinking of skiping 680/7970 cards?

Hi guys,
Really thinking of giving the 680 a miss(mainly due to price).Have always upgraded to the fastest gpu when released during the past 15 years or so but this year I really can't justify it.2012 seems really quiet on the pc gaming front compared to the last 2 years.
Only games Im really looking forward to are Project Cars and Assetto Corsa which won't be released untill early 2013.
Hopefully the ''real'' Kelper cards will be released before this time next year, saving already lol.
There seems to be an acceptance of the prices of the GTX 680 whereas people were up in arms over AMDs 7970 when released.
Anyway thanks to the sheer incompetence of the Irish Government the past 4 years my pc budget is getting smaller and smaller every year.
Really hope ''real/big'' kelper doesn't disappoint when launched.
Foe those that are currently enjoying the 680/7970's hope you having a ball.

Is the 680 the next gen Nvidia card then? it's been around 18 months since my last hardware update so i'm not to clued up on whats about

The last cards i remember were the 580/70's which were just mildly updated versions of the 480/70s and not substancially faster

Whats the deal with the 680, is a real improvement over a 470/570 class card?

What is a kelper? ;)

Me too, I can't afford it this year and my 6950 (unlocked shaders) is doing fine at 1080p. I may buy the next gen depending on price/performance.

The other day I was going to "low ball" someone for a 2nd hand XFX R7970 for about £290 but after thinking about it a bit, I believe I would have regretted purchasing at that price.

Although I know its a good price, the performance will be less than my current setup so I would have to buy another card to satisfy myself, which is then way outside how much I would like to spend.
Also I would actually like a 680 more than a 7970 but their pricing is monumentally stupid at the moment.

This generation simply makes no sense to me.

They feel expensive but I also remember buying a MSI ATI RADEON X800XT Platinum Edition 256 MB for around £400 when they were released, 8 years on prices haven't really increased that much.

Yes its an improvement but at too much cost for my liking. Still liking my 470 and deals with the games I play very well (Skyrim, Fallout etc ). Having skipped the Nvidia 5** series (very small jump ) and the 6950\6970 (same reason ) I will probably skip this as well. Looks to me as if numbers are being kept tight to keep the price inflated, anyway off to Florida on my hols in 5 weeks and may get something there if price is reasonable, at least there you dont get ripped off on inflated taxes. On a similar theme what gives with the huge prices on these 580's and these and these in the 'B' grade graphics section, christ they are more expensive than new ones, cant fathom Ocuk pricing structure on B grade products at times.:eek::eek:

^ This, 2 year old GPU's can handle todays games just fine, im on a single GTX 480 and it can max BF3. There is no need to upgrade, only for E-Peen really unless your on multi screens or higher than 1080P. I must admit I went for the E-Peen 7970 at launch but got buyers remorse, £400 was to much for a single card. The GTX 680 at £440+ is ridiculous aswell. Anyway I switced to a GTX 480 just over £100, much happier no buyers remorse and can max BF3 :-D

Exactly, the GTX 680 is really only a stopgap card until the real deal Kepler cards arrive later on, if there launched this year not very long to wait, and no new games on the horizen that won't run on most cards from the past 2-3 years anyway. The 680 isn't doing anything amazing over the current cards excpet run cooler use less power.. Is it worth £440+?

That's becausce Nvidia fans are louder on forums than AMD fans lol. The HD 7970 was labelled as not powerful enough and overpriced, along came the 680 similar power, costs more and that was fine. Fickle is fickle lol :).

I'm planning on skipping the 680 as NVIDIA have made the card to just beat 7970 and make their money from it which is fair enough as they lost so much ground to AMD.

I hope within a year from now they release that 512bit beast that I'm waiting for. Will also not bother with Ivybridge and just have a big upgrade next year probably.

Same, hoping GK110 will be a beast, a big improvement like back when the 8800GTX launched or the HD 5870/GTX 480 launched. These past couple of gens have been more like refreshes rather than next gen cards.

Well I stuck with my 5870 so skipped the GTX580/6970 series so a 7970 was a logical upgrade for me - I've been very happy with it for the few months I've had it.

My next update will be a complete system/platform refresh - I usually have 2 graphics cards per main system/platform.

The 680 looks great, but my 580 will run every game I have (Crysis, BF3, Metro 2033) on max or just below fine. So until something comes out that needs the extra power... no 680 for me.

Sitting this one out with 1 HD6950, though I may pinch another for CF if one comes up cheap, like I did with 5850s. I miss the performance of that setup tbh

If you're running on a single screen at 1080p, and your current GPU can max any game you're running, why wouldn't you skip this generation? It makes absolutely no sense to pay to upgrade when you're not going to notice the difference.

I did buy a 7970 at launch because my crossfired 5870's were having issues running decent settings across three screens. It cost me just over £200 to upgrade and I haven't regretted it for a second. However, if I'd only been running the one screen there's no question the 5870's would still be in place in my PC.

The current generation top end cards in my opinion, only make sense if you're running multi-screen or a 30" monster screen.
