It is very helpful that leaflet regarding the elections that the government sent to me states that translation notes will be available at my local election centre in Somali, Tamil, Urdu, Yoruba among many others.

Another excellent use of the tax-payers' money. Why would the government be pushing for people who can't speak English to vote? Who wants to take a guess at how the Balkanisation of a country ends?

If they have the right to vote isn't it in the interests of democracy to ensure they can understand the issues? If the government doesn't someone else will.

So people who have just moved here and don't speak English, shouldn't be able to vote?

Only British citizens should be eligible to vote, someone who has just arrived here and doesn't speak English isn't likely to be a British citizen. Why we allow people to become British citizens who can't speak or read English is beyond me.

Because it takes many years to learn English to a decent standard, they should be able to vote while they are still learning.

It takes many years to become a British citizen - five to be precise (too few imo). If they can't learn English within 5 years of living here then they probably ought to consider leaving the UK.

I agree, Labours open door policy was a terrible idea, along with the constant pandering to whatever needs they require has now created this issue. The Councils need to start to spend money on the things that matter and not on translating great swathes of documents the better. The Lib Dem's are holding us back in what we need to do :( We've got enough low skill labour, close the gates.

I never knew it was that long, I admit that most people could learn a language in that time but I don't really see the harm. They still live here and as a democracy we should still allow them to vote.
Imo the people who haven't learnt English are just lazy, simple as that and it's their own problem. I would hate to live in a country and not know the language.
I don't think it's that much of a problem though, we are talking 1% of immigrants imo.

Even longer at times =) Time spent as a student doesn't count towards the 5 years.
