I thought I would share this news story with you from our local rag website.

Brief: A local outdoor education center working for disadvantaged children has been subject to racial abuse and two arson attacks...

I am somewhat shocked. I live in the sleepy countryside and I am probably very naieve, but this.... I was under the impression none of this behaviour happend down here! Sad times really...

What drives a human to be so cruel?

In 2008, a pig's head was mounted on a cross outside Quenchwell Chapel, Truro, which was about to be turned into a Muslim centre.

Wonder if the guy himself is a Muslim?

He wants to offer respite holidays to "urban" children

Notice the bracketed word URBAN children?

I don't agree with this attack at all!, however i'd say there is more to this story

I can say I read much into the brackets myself.. Its not exactly the The Mail..

I guess there is always more to a story, I was just talking about the act of arson really and how shocked I am that it happened.. Its just down the road from me. I am surprised I had not heard about it sooner. Its just really sad. Poor guy loosing all his stuff, no insurance etc..

Might sound a bit weird, but to be honest I just never see any other ethnicities down here than white :\

Maybe I'm not going to the right places eg Redruth and Camborne :p

Yup and arguably racism down in Cornwall and Devon is still pretty rife among the older generations.

I used to work for a regional company full of old boy labourer types and the language that we used to hear when doing site visits to some of the remote depots was very bad imho.

You have a point. It is pretty white down here. That is zero excuse for racisim. I just dont get it really. The whole thing....

Nowt wrong with Camborne... Apart from the rain at them moment.

Yeah I work really near both those places I mentioned and it's not that bad, just got a helluva reputation for being... not exactly nice places :p

Its true.. There is a huge stigmata attached to living in both those places...

Just found a website for the place:

http://www.thebeaconofhope.co.uk/

They seem to be getting their feet back, People have been donating. I have just given them some too, Thats my good deed done for today...

I know this happens everywhere, I just feel touched by this story, perhaps because its on my doorstep...

Jeeze - yeah the author of that piece seems to share the sentiments of the arsonists - that the 'ethnic minorities' shouldn't have been there... but then says that they should have employed local Cornish workers...

I know the surfers can get a bit territorial down there but.....

I kinda expect that in places like Devon, Cornwall, Wales, Scotland etc..

I do, Devon and Cornwall are the last areas of the Uk to that multicultural i'd hazard a guess to say..

It could be like a half hearted attempt at a project that would most likely never get off the ground anyway "no funds"
like the Copper said racism aside .. maybe they just don't like him!
Would like to hear what the locals have to say;)
