***The Official Samsung Galaxy S III Thread***

Looks like any other pouch, just with an extra pocket. I won't be using it for any of my phones though either way.

Are you sure people didn't claim you didn't need more that dual core on a desktop at that point in time? I doubt anyone claimed you'd never need more than two.

A high end dual core is still more than enough for most people even today.

Just because it's more than enough doesn't mean it's more than enough in this day and age.

The Galaxy S2 can power through as a mini computer when paired with a bluetooth mouse and keyboard then connected to a monitor via HDMI but there are still areas it can improve and as shown in the many videos of the S3, those improvements come from the extra cores.

And not just improvements in performance, but power efficiency too when 3 cores switch off during idle or whatever other method they use.

But those improvements are not just brought by having more cores as we can see that the dual core krait is still better in some areas than the GS 3 CPU and not much has to be said when comparing it to the quad in the X as plenty of benchmarks show the difference as well as the reviews of the XL, it is largely brought by the new architecture etc. especially for power efficiency.

Battery life should be better in theory with quad (with new tech. like the GS 3 CPU, not the X CPU), however, it won't be a massive difference especially if all 4 cores are being used.

As for today desktop PC's needing a quad core, you only need quad if you plan on playing BF 3 and BC 2 along with a couple of other demanding games at max settings smoothly and if you do encoding, a top dual core is still more than enough for most tasks such as browsing, blu ray playback, the majority of games etc.

EDIT:

So unless there are some games coming out that will take advantage of the extra cores, then it is not of any use at all for performance and I can't see any other benefits of having "quad" for any other usage apart from it looking and sounding cool on the spec sheet for at least the next 2 years :p

Incorrect. If you check the AndroidNZ article posted above you'll see that the new Exynos improvements resulted in an extra 2 hours of actual use.

There are a few key points I do want to highlight here however. Firstly, their bottom line on the HK-MG tech: "The combination of these two innovations results in less wasted current and more efficient current delivery, which in turn can give us a more power efficient chip." That's all well and good in theory of course, but what actually happened when they put the iPad2 revision up against the earlier one in a series of battery tests? Well, it got close to or better than two hours extra operating time across the board whether that use be watching HD high profile video, playing Infinity Blade 2, or browsing the web. Impressive, and perhaps the knowledge behind J K Shin's apparently blithe assurance at the S3 announcement event that "You don't need to worry about battery consumption."

Of course that was relating to the iPad2 but the same should still apply here on the S3 as well versus the competition.

Not to mention the fact that more cores usually equals slower speeds per core on introduction. For example my 3820 has 3.8GHz per core whereas the 6 core 3930K has 3.2GHz.

Single threaded applications will then be slower under the multi-core processor.

Thats what i mean , the gs3 has a very fast gpu , but are we going to get games etc to take advantage of it ? Gaming on iphone does evolve as the devs only have a few tech to develop for.
So when the 4s came out games were stepped up to take advantage of it .
The ONE X has tegra zone so has HD games esp for it but the mali doesnt , thats why i wonder as to why all the graphical muscle in the gs3 ?

Because the Galaxy lines always have top components, being flagship handsets and all.

And because it's only been over the last ~12 months that big name game devs have stretched muscles across the Android world, not just on Tegra.

Besides, for those not on Tegra, there's always Chainfire3D.

If true, then impressive, but will wait and see user reviews of battery life first as I have mixed feelings as to how it could turn out :p

You can play those tegra games on any device, just have to root and install chainfire etc. :p

Is this true of tegra 3 as well ? or only tegra 2 games ?

Not 100% sure on that as I have little interest in that stuff for now.......

But had a quick google and it appears that tegra 3 does work with chainfire.

Even if it didn't, I am sure that the developers of chainfire will update it so that it does work with tegra 3 :)

Yeah not had any problems playing Tegra games on the S2 either, not that they held my attention for very long though!

When you look at BrowserMark and Sunspider it just shows how well Samsung have tailored/optimised it's software to eek as much as it can out of the lower clocked A9 cores. If HTC did the same with the S4 it would have been ahead in those benches. a lot of performance is to be gained with Software optimisation.

EDIT: Even when browsing the net all 4 cores are used - windows 7 and a lot of programs use 4 cores.

Anyone pre-ordered via Play.com before as far as phones are concerned? I notice that CPW are on back order so I imagine anyone pre-ordering a sim free device now will be put at the back of the list as contract deal handsets will take priority.

It's pointless walking into the CPW by work as the people there give the same line "we won't know until release day".

I may as well pre-order from Play and get the 64GB card at the same time and await shipment but only really willing to do that if they are as good with phone pre-orders as they are with games.

Edit*

The Play.com pre-order comes with a Samsung bumper case and screen protector free, the case is worth £15 so I imagine it is genuine but there is no image of it yet.

My friend still rocks his ip4 and I dont think there is actual a game that doesnt still run on it just fine so I'm not 100% sure the new GPU is really taken advantage off even in the 4s.

Yeah, there are some games designed specifically for the 4S and they tend to look a bit better than the 'normal' ones for the iPhone 4 or even 3GS, but there's not a lot in it.

The S2 will run pretty much anything that the S3 will for a good while yet. It may be restricted by device (like TegraZone), but XDA will get around that.

Im pretty sure 4S specific games run at lower visual glitter when on the 4.
