Guys, i done first squats yesterday as part of the 5x5 stronglifts

I have a problem, i was only doing 45kg, a couple of issues, how, when i get to heavier weights, do i actually get the bar up, over my head and back? ( i dont have a squat rack) and secondly, i have today a bit of a pain in my base of my neck/back where the bar was, i put a towel on it last night but it didnt seem to work really. Is that just how it is? and i should suck it up or am i doing it wrong?

The bar shouldn't cause too much discomfort if you have it placed properly, I don't use a pad/towel over the bar and had 160kg on my back yesterday without it being uncomfortable. Play around with the position till it feels comfortable.

As for the lack of a power rack I think this will severely limit your progression, you'd be best getting yourself to a gym where they have the proper equipment.

Where is it you train then? If at home, save up for a small rack or if you're limited on space you can get those weird stands for squats...

Regarding the pain, are you doing high bar or low bar squat? You shouldn't be getting much pain on your neck at all really - So I can only presume the bar was quite high up?

Best bet would be to get a video of how you setup and show us on here :)

If you can't afford a rack / stands...It may be worth trying out front squats as an alternative, at least then you can clean the bar up and squat from there.

Yeah saying you bench 2 plates would be 2x20kg either side plus 20kg for the bar, so 100kg, 3 plates 140kg, 4 plates 180kg etc

When ever people I know or I say we bench 2 plates it means one plate each side. Not two plates each side as that would be 4 plates.
Basic maths....

You and your friends are very odd then. :p

This has been the consensus in lifting for... a long time. Go to any dedicated lifting forum, and you'll see.

Yea i train at home in my garage as my life just doesn't give me time to get to the gym at the moment, i bought myself a weights bench a few years back, barbell, few sets of dumbbells and a multi gym machine, dusted it all off in Jan but only got my barbell out the other day.

high bar or low bar squats? high is at the back and front under your chin from the front? i was doing high then, i lift the bar from the floor, behind my head and lower down across my shoulders like this dude

I think i definitely need to pick up some squat racks, no doubt about it.

In a lot of circles, especially power lifting, it's standard to refer to how many plates are on one side; it's easier to refer to a 120kg squat as a 2.5 plate squat rather than your way which would be 4 plates plus 2 half plates.

No, hig bar and low bar are different positions on your back. Google it.

The bar in front of you is a front squat as you'd expect.

None of the power lifters I know ever refered to it as you do.
Even easier still is to just say what weight you did, as for some people a plate is either 20kg or 25kg.

I've always referred to a "plate" as a standard 20kg and the amount of plates is per side.
5 plates is a 220kg lift.

It's certainly how things are done in America.

Go on T-nation or BB.com and tell someone you did an 8 plate deadlift...

Goals to get before my 20th:
4 plate squat
5 plate deadlift

Should be fun :). I don't know if I'll get the deadlift at nationals in august but I shouldn't be too far off.

Same on Sugden Barbell where all the UK Strongmen post.

Have never really heard anyone talk about half plates though. When talking about 'plates' you're usually just talking about 60, 100, 140, 180, 220 etc.

You must have been really ****ing confused when someone told you they had a 5 plate deadlift. :p
