Is there any advantage in terms of loot and gold by playing on hard instead of normal difficulty ?

I assumed I could install the game without a key, since the key is tied to your account and the game is online anyway, so it can be checked then. Is this right? Does the installer ask for your key before you start installing? I downloaded the installer so I can install it tonight and play tomorrow when my boxed game arrives. Will be lame if I can't even start the install without a key.
