Whilst it wouldn't affect anyone's work ethic, by taking the pic example above, if that Dr. was say a children's Dr with a neck tattoo of skulls, It would certainly have an effect on the relationship between Dr. and patient on a daily basis. You'd certainly have a problem at interview stage - which is why the pic above (real or not) illustrates that he was sensible enough to cover his sleeves (probably at interview stage).

I'm not a "judgemental douchebag" - personally it wouldn't affect my choices if I was an employer, but I'm not everyone, and you can't expect people to like it and treat you the same. It's a choice you make, and you will have to deal with the consequences of your actions.

If you're applying for a job and someone else gets it over you, you have no case for discrimination, therefore it's your problem not everyone else's.

this kind of echoes my thoughts. this is why not enough people think these things through before they get them when they're younger and going through a 'phase'. the trouble with phases are that the repercussions often last a lot longer than the phase.

So are you both in phases where you don't want piercings?! Why is it a phase? I wanted to have my earring, but now I don't think it's so appropriate.

a stage in a process of change or development: Each phase of life brings its own joys.

it was a phase that once bought you joy but now doesn't. unfortuanetly you have a consequence. i was never a part of that phase, same with tattoo's and never will be. pretty much for the exact situation you find yourself in. i personally don't feel the need to pierce or tattoo my body to find joy or expression and i have nothing against people who do, heck, it's your body, do what you like with it, just don't expect to not meet prejudice and hurdles on the way. i'm not even sure prejudice is completely applicable as it was a life choice.

Sorry dude, it wasn't aimed at you so sorry if it sounded that way. You seem to have a good view on things. You make a fair point, I just wish people wouldn't judge like that.

I guess it could be defined as a phase, but for a lot of people it's more a lifestyle choice (this does not include me). Once again, I just wish people were more open minded.

I had mine done to 10mm. Haven't worn them for years and they've healed up small, thank god. When I see the larger, OTT ones, I do think it's far too much, but each to their own I guess.

I'd like them completely fixed as I think they look silly, hippy-like and 'alternative' (that's certainly not me, far from!).

Although I don't think it would be a problem for me personally, staying in academia, but still!
