New Samsung S23A700D 120Hz

It's OK I suppose, tried GOW on it, essentially it works with no performance hit as the monitors doing the work.

Bear in mind though that the reason I'm saying it's OK though is that PC games using Tridef totally blow away anything using the onboard 2D>3D conversion.

Thanks for the reply, I'm not really bothered about the 3D at all, just how well it displays 360 games in general really.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of info out there on consoles & monitors.

I have had this monitor a few weeks now. First off the 120mhz make a real differance. I'd upgrade for this alone. However I discovered tridef. I have 3d IMAX movie. After setting this up I was amazed by the quality. Never seen anything like this i was amazed.
3d games look immense and bf3 takes it to a new level. 2d is good but 3d really is something special.

Well after sleeping on it Ive decided that I might as well send it back again, otherwise I should have kept the one with just the single faulted pixel lol.

I asked if they could check it before sending it to prevent me having 3 faulty ones on the trot, but the OCUK RMA man said he cant do it legally apparently :( so that kinda sucks.

Wish me luck. :D

Did you rma it,and get a good one mate, hope so.

MagicBright or MagicAngle? Custom on MagicAngle just means you are using the last set MagicAngle mode plus any additional modifications you made. You should set it to 'GroupView' for optimum results and make sure 'HDMI Black' level is set to 'normal' and not 'low'. This works nicely for AMD users - some Nvidia users may find disabling MagicAngle and setting Gamma to 'Mode 3' works nicely. Whatever you do don't touch the contrast, there is no need as it is already optmial by default.

Magic angle, it's set to group view, but the backlight bleed is amplified in this mode, but it's also the one that looks best for everything else.

How are you assessing the backlight bleed?

It might be the wrong terminology, but just above my Samsung logo you can see white light on the black, it covers pretty much the bottom of the monitor.

If I run a 2.XX aspect ratio file where its letter boxed, you can quite clearly see it too.

Group view of with lean back mode 1, the backlight problem isn't there, but everything looks meh.

That's interesting (it does sound like backlight bleedthrough). What do you have brightness set to? And what about if you lower it? One of the potential issues with the MagicAngle modes such as GroupView is that they alter the gamma such that the peak brightness is lowered for a given black level. The backlight intensity is set by the brightness and the monitor should have a level of bleed-through proportional to this. In other words you may be using a higher brightness level to get a good image than you would under standard settings. On the SA750/950 series connected to an AMD GPU 'Lean Back' modes will actually elevate black levels digitally but the remaining settings should not change this compared to standard settings (i.e. MagicAngle disabled). I can't imagine the SA700 series is different in this respect although I haven't specifically checked for this.

Sometimes certain settings in the Nvidia driver can cause the monitor to output a dark dithered grey instead of black - similar to what Lean Back modes will do on the SA750/950. Check that the colour output is set to RGB PC mode and check any source settings are set to PC and not auto. I can't really offer any guidance on this and it may not be something you can even set if connected via DVI - I only run AMD GPUs at the moment. :(

I'm on an AMD GPU :p
7970 DCII.
I'm running through DVI.

I'm at 75 brightness, putting the brightness to 0 removes it a bit, but not to the same extent of running lean back mode.

Haha. Oh. It's just I saw "when I used my GTX680" and thought you were still using it - my lazy fault. ;)

I haven't actually sat down with an S23A700D to configure it so didn't get to compare how the MagicAngle settings react. That's interesting because having tested an S27A750D on a Radeon 6950 and 7950 the 'Lean Back' modes make blacks appear either dark grey or a ridiculously milky grey so that further up the screen is lightened. This would reduce any excess backlight bleed-through simply because it weakens the contrast between the 'bleed' and the deeper black further up. I'm going to see if I can get hold of an S23A700D for some more testing and see if I can work this one out. But are you enjoying the monitor aside from that?

Whilst browsing and scrolling up and down I notice flickering at the top of the page. The flickering would occur as horizontal lines. I tried changing cables from dual link dvi to single dvi and hdmi and it didn't solve it. Put the card in another pcie slot; Rolled back to 12.3 amd drivers from 12.4; uninstalled the logitech mouse drivers all which did not fix my problem. Only changing the refresh rate to 60hz worked.

Note for gaming I have no problem and the problem only happens whilst browsing.

I have an amd 7850 and samsung sa700 all with the latest drivers.

Has anyone else had the same problem? It kind of defeats the object getting a 120hz monitor when I need to cap it at 60hz.

Hi people! New here, first post. Just wondering as I seem to have missed this monitor's weekend deal if there is something similar (120hz, 27") that you'd recommend.

I'm not bothered about 3D at all, this will be my games monitor :)

I posted earlier this evening on AVF for some advice on what seems to be a similar or the same issue. majnu mentioned this thread so thought I'd post some info up as there are probably more owners of this monitor here than anywhere else!

I get the issue when browsing and it seems to be more noticeable when scrolling or when there is a dark (grey esp.) background. I don't see the lines a lot whilst browsing and sometimes you could blink and miss it.

However, where I have found it very noticeable is when I've been going through the menu options in Serious Sam 3. I get mutiple lines appearing at any one time but for some reason it seems localised to the 'graphic options' sub menu and not really evident in any of the others, despite them all looking much the same. The only thing I can see that is different between the screens is that there is a small video clip running on the right hand side. Whilst playing the game (or any other game for that matter) the problem is not evident at all, it is purely in the menus. I've attached a link to a video clip I've taken (please excuse the poor quality):

Like majnu if I drop the refresh rate down to 120Hz to 60Hz the problem ceases. Bump it back up to either 100 or 120Hz and it starts again.

The problem has only been evident since I installed a new 7970 yesterday and before that I had been using a 670 on my monitor @120Hz and did not see this issue whilst browsing or in SS3. In SS3 it's not something I think I'd miss because it is very evident!

Initially I was concerned it was a faulty card but because it only seems to happen under certain conditions and majnu has the same problem I'm leaning more towards some kind of software issue, but whether it is to do with Catalyst, Samsung's monitor or possibly even Logitech's mouse drivers (we both use a Logitech mouse) I'm not sure.

It would be interesting to hear if anyone else is having similar issues. Or if you have this monitor, a 7000 series card and a copy of SS3 perhaps you could try it out and report back?

Perhaps even someone with an Nvidia card to check SS3 just to make sure my memory isn't playing tricks on me!

Hopefully by a process of elimination it might be possible to at least eliminate a few things from the equation :)

@jellofund

For me gaming is fine. I'll try and eliminate the following by trying them again whilst keeping the refresh rate at 120hz (Any driver uninstall will be followed by a clean with drive sweeper):

0. Reset Monitor
1. Connect straight to the iGPU display output
2. Connect to another display output port on the 7850
b) Whilst using another HDMI and DVI cable
3. Try another PCIE slot
4. Restore card back to stock speeds and voltages.
5. Uninstall GPU overclocking utility and FRAPS
6. Uninstall Logitech G700 drivers and utility
7. Uninstall Samsung Display monitor driver
8. Uninstall TriDef
9. Install Monitor driver straight from Samsung's Website (Previously I installed it from disc and then updated it from Samsung's Website in order for the registration to be performed on disc in case Tri Def through a wobbly)
8. Uninstall 12.4 CCC
9. Uninstall 12.4 CAP
10. Uninstall 12.4 drivers and install 12.3
11. Flash Bios of card to another 7850.
12. Try and hunt down service menu for the monitor and see if there is anything in it which can be changed.

I think that will cover all the bases and is more thorough than what I did before.

Edit @jellofund I updated the thread on AVF. But just to close the issue and in case it helps anyone here

I previously uninstalled Set Point and this time I uninstalled Logitech Flow Scroll and the issue seems to have gone. I will need to test it out more thoroughly on different websites and browsers before I can be 100% sure.

I still think that there is one remaining Logitech driver but I can't find it in CP. I know there is one as my wireless mouse is still working. If I uninstalled everything then the mouse should only work with the usb lead only attached.

Edit:
I just called Logitech (020 302 48159) and they are aware of the issue. The chap said that Flow Scroll adds an unnecessary lawyer of complexity and is more for their touch mice (cube and m600 I think he mentioned).

Anyway I passed on the full detail of the problem re: 60/120hz and he said he'll pass it on to the relevant department as Logitech are continuously working on improving their products and take customer feedback seriously blah blah blah.

sonuva! i've had it for a month and it's already developed a dead pixel! is one dead pixel after a month of use accepted by samsung for a replacement?

edit: oh no it's actually a bit of dirt under the glass. used a 30x magnifying glass and it seems to move from different angles, plus it's got an irregular shape. tried tapping and massaging... no luck. does anyone know if i could... take the glass off and remove the dust? or if samsung would replace this :s. surely a bit of dust under the glass after one month of careful usage would indicate a poor airtight seal

My order of this beauty arrived today. I can't believe how glossy it is, definite dust magnet. The 3D works a treat as on the PS3 which is one of the main reasons why I got it. No dead pixels that I can see on first inspection, yet to see bleeding.
