Utter rubbish, France does rather well out of tourism and they had a monarchy. The UK will still do brilliantly without a royalty, in fact it is rather insulting to all of us that are not in the royal family and are British is that without the royal family we'd be up **** creek tourism wise.

Once the current Queen of England gets her rather obvious reward of being on the throne longer than Victoria, hang the lot of them.

Get back to me when you've got a reply to something I actually wrote and you can explain the reward that's so obvious to you.

She's a political backstop against tyranny. An insurance policy, if you like. She still has the authority to command the armed forces, make the government redundant, dissolve the entire parliamentary system and rule by decree. In extreme circumstances, she's the anchor for stable revolution by legitimising it.

When I was younger I never 'got' the monarchy. I couldn;t understand why we had it. As an 8yr old back in '77 (ironically the same age as my daughter now) I dressed up for a street party and they were far more popular than they are now.

But as I've grown older I've come to understand the value they offer as that insurance policy (and the value they add in tourism to some extent).

You might find that the royal family brings in more money into the country than the amount that is spent on them. Good for the economy.

thats actually rubbish out of the top 20 tourism attractions in the UK only one is associated with the royal family at number 17 which is windsor castle, that would still be there without them.

They are not good for the economy there is little economic associated with them, that argument is part of the BS fed to us by the royal loving media. There is no place for monarchy in decent democratic society, after all we should be citizens not subjects

The royal bring in direct tourism funds in my opinion. It's regrettable that it cannot be measured to shush you

The Crown Estate can be measured and would shush them if they cared about the truth. Since they don't, nothing would shush them.

If someone says that they think it doesn't matter how much money the monarchy brings in to the country because they think we should get rid of them for political reasons, I can respect that. When they lie about the money it shows that they're just another person lying for propaganda purposes.

We do have a democratic society though and I'm a British Citizen, my passport says so.

I'm more than happy to be a subject though because I think its important to keep our history, especially in a country that has changed so much.

God bless the Queen! or is that not politically correct thing to say? :p

This country has a rich history with all the Kings and Queens and all the shenanigans that ensued, making this one of the greatest countries in the world especially for it's small size. We and the whole world simply wouldn't be the same if we didn't have them, they are core to us. I wouldn't say she's my favourite monarch i would rather a King with strong character, but let's give her some credit 60 years is a good innings :D

It's like the royal wedding again. It's EVERYWHERE.

And yet I've managed to completely avoid any coverage of it with no effort.

It's really sad how unpatriotic this country is at the moment. Many other countries are proud of themselves and have a deep knowledge of their long histories and politics. This place doesn't, and we have one of the richest histories there is. In fact a lot of people think it's wrong and offensive to be patriotic. Idiots.

I don't think this forum is typical. I post regularly on another forum with more mature posters and they're mostly all in favour of our Monarchy and all the ceremony behind it. It's just the younger generation who seem to think it's trendy 'hate' the Royal Family.

You just have to look at the Royal Wedding last year and see how superbly we carried it off. We do know how to put on a good show.

why is it important to be stuck in the past, surely society has moved on so much more since the monarchy, its woefully out of date and there is no place for feudalism in contemporary society

Because our past is part of our heritage and who we are in this country.

TBH working in NUL and living in Manchester, all i've heard about for the past week is the Olympic Torch Relay

In terms of my interest

Jubilee >>>>>>>>> Olympic Torch Relay

In 2002 I was at university, we had t shirts made up with 50 pint glasses on them which we crossed off with black marker as we went aloong and preceded to get wrecked for the Jubilee weekend, have had a remenisce about it this week. I think 60 is a pretty good target for any youngsters (the girls who did it were allowed to count halfs rather than pints)

For a start off,not everyone gets paid bank holidays,do stop the gloating that you do get extra paid days off,ban all bank holidays and get back to work peasants.
