Diamond Jubilee - why this weekend?

It's really sad how unpatriotic this country is at the moment. Many other countries are proud of themselves and have a deep knowledge of their long histories and politics. This place doesn't, and we have one of the richest histories there is. In fact a lot of people think it's wrong and offensive to be patriotic. Idiots.

I like to think part of that is because as British we can't just see one side of the story.

While the Americans can sit there and happy clap away to all the great amazing things they've done in the past when you try it in Britain we also feel compelled to look at all the bad we've done too.

And lets face it despite all the great achievements of Britain in the past it's stained with blood and many shameful events.

*IBT "oh but all countries did bad things in the past" yes they did but that doesn't change anything and more importantly, we're British we should be better than all the others.

How the hell can I 'love' and feel 'proud' of a place I had no choice in being born there in the first place?

Because it's not where you're born you're meant to be proud of it's the culture and people you were raised by, if it was simply a place you were born then all people from all countries would be the same yet they're not.

Because you're raised with the beliefs, ideals and viewpoint of the country of your origin.

why is it important to be stuck in the past, surely society has moved on so much more since the monarchy, its woefully out of date and there is no place for feudalism in contemporary society

Feel free to point out how this "feudalism" impacts on your daily life.

Why, only last week I travelled to a different manor without requiring permission from my lord!

It's possible to frame the partially capitalist society we have now as being somewhat akin to feudalism, but (i) that's stretching a point (ii) it wouldn't be like actual feudalism was anyway and (iii) it has nothing to do with the queen unless you're directly employed by her.

true cost of the royals is a bunch of ****.

we could kill them take all the castles and **** back , turn them into luxury hotels or museums an still rake in a fortune.

We could kill everyone who is rich and steal all of their money...but look how well communism turned out for Russia. You're a fool for advocating violent, enforced communism. Even if you ignore ethics, it's still foolish because it doesn't work, simple as that.

people dont visit england to see the royals.. they never get to see them anyway its the buildings which would remain long after their bloodline was wiped out

The buildings attract tourists because of the connection with the royal family.

Any sizable company could easily build a replica of Buckingham palace, or a palace far more ornate and imposing. It wouldn't attract the same tourists because it wouldn't be the home of a real queen.

But as somebody has already said, the buildings wouldn't be up kept and would fall into disrepair.

Fewer people, and fewer every year as time goes on. Oh, you might get a temporary increase if you worked it right, like murdering them all in a nicely visible place that you could market for a while (see the bullet-marked wall where they were shot!), but it wouldn't last long.

A castle that a queen used to live in years ago isn't as much of a tourist attraction as one that a queen lives in now.

You'd be throwing money away for the sake of...what, exactly?

as I pointed out earlier there is only one royal building in the top 20 tourism destinations in the UK, its windsor castle at number 17, legoland beats it for **** sake.

end the monarchy, balls to the queen etc etc

The royal family is bigger in other countries than it is in this one. Japan goes insane for our royals.

Personally I think it's a case of let them be. Some people who say they just "sit on their ass and get paid" You obviously have no clue as to what the royal family do. They're always out and about, showing support for various causes. They give royal approval and support to many organisations(Big and Small)!

It was put in June so we could have street parties in the warm, sunny British Summer and avoid the cold, wet weather of February.

I watched the film The Queen yesterday and there was a very poignant line in it.

Tony Blair: You know, when you get it wrong, you really get it wrong! That woman has given her whole life in service to her people. Fifty years doing a job SHE never wanted! A job she watched kill her father. She's executed it with honor, dignity, and, as far as I can tell, without a single blemish, and now we're all baying for her blood! All because she's struggling to lead the world in mourning for someone who... who threw everything she offered back in her face. And who, for the last few years, seemed committed 24/7 to destroying everything she holds most dear!

Yes the Queen has a great deal of privilege that we don't have - but she lives in a gilded cage. If I think back to the things that I've enjoyed in my life, she would not have been able to do most of them.

If on her Jubilee weekend you cannot silence your petty jealous whines then I don't think it speaks highly of you.

Please show just the smallest iota of dignity.

Prince Charles has earns some 5 million pounds for various charities every year...
Not many people think of that.

Plus, what about companies who bare the Royal mark ( Lea & Perrings, Twinings, ETC) with the Royals the economy would be hit more than people realise.

no because the media is biased, feeding people the jubilee BS you don't see the BBC covering the 750 people protesting on the bridge supporting republic, I'm not jealous of the royals, why should I be, least I work for my money and support pro-social ideals, all the monarchy does is reinforce the rich/poor gap.

I for one hope the monarchy dies with this queen, the sooner the better!

Its democracy and capitalism that need a serious overhaul, not the monarchy.

Replace it with what ? Still need a head of state. Find one that doesn't need security and doesn't want to be paid ?

just seen this on twitter, says it all:

#jubilee family day Hyde Park. Baked Potato with one filling £9:00 Water £4:00 Plastic fork that can't cut the potato £1:00

You're not jealous of them but you go on to explain why you're jealous of them.

What 750 people on the bridge? I know Republic is planning some failfest.

Wishing the death of the Queen is disgusting, you should be ashamed of yourself. I'm adding you to my ignore list because I don't want to read any more hate from you.

What is sad is how patriotism gets forced down everyone's throats, whether they want it or not. How the hell can I 'love' and feel 'proud' of a place I had no choice in being born there in the first place? Saying that, I'm not a hater but all the same I feel totally indifferent about the Queen, UK's history, people, customs or flags. I do however understand everyone's need to belong to something as arbitrary as a nationality, culture or footie team, but just as long as those bobbing flag-wavers realize that not everyone feels the same way.

You have wildly overstated the point to the extent its hard to take you seriously. There are countries where people are literally rounded up and put on coaches to wave flags at some event or other, this country is very far removed from that. Patriotism is no more forced down peoples throats than support of the local football team.

+1

It's the beauty and downfall of the Internet. You can't stop morons posting but once they are known you can blissfully ignore them forever :)
