I bought and read all the books after the first series had finished. A big bonus is that nobody will ever be able to spoil you by posting things that happen in later books. The downside is that you may not enjoy the show as much since you will see where they have cut characters that you like and scenes which you think are very important (Most of this Season I'm looking at you).

Fixed :(

Do you think they can do it with the current budget or are we going to be disappointed?

Given the battles they've cut already then yes, I suspect we'll be disappointed.

The attack on King's Landing was spectacular until the troops landed. There are far more troops involved than you see on screen, and they've changed the way things happen (for example, Tyrion is on the deck of a ship when attacked by the King's Guard, not in the Castle). The battle rages for far longer as well.

It's a shame really, but I can see as far as that instance is concerned they did the best with the money they had.

250kms by that map from Castle Black?

Oh, I meant in relation to the continent in general - and say the distance from Winterfell to the wall :)

Yeah that is what I am most afraid of... absolutely loving the show so far, and don't want to ruin it for myself!

No.

I watched season 1 and then read all the books. Glad I did.

This is what I did. Except it wasn't the whole of the first season, it was probably the first 3 or 4 episodes. I found it useful when reading the books, I pictured the TV characters while reading. Helped to mentally set the scene as it were.

I think I'd have given up on some of the Season 2 plot threads if I didn't have prior knowledge of the books to fall back on.
Events at Winterfell and beyond the Wall in particular were pretty rushed and confused.

Brienne's scenes are exactly as she is portrayed in the book... she isn't expressive or animated, she is awkward and wooden... and resolutely determined to ignore any goading she is subjected to, having been subjected to it her whole life for being the only (known) female knightly warrior in the Seven Kingdoms. Yet they portrayed well the seething anger which lies under the surface of her stoic demeanour, when she maliciously (deservedly, but maliciously) gutted the Northman who had put one of the whores who lay with Lannisters to a slow and painful death. I also think she looks the part too, powerful and broad physique with barely even a hint of comeliness about her.

Dacey Mormont?

That's not 250, that's 500km.
Yeah, not far at all!

Fist is closer to the wall than Winterfell is to the wall however.

I've watched S1+2 now, and I'm halfway through book 1. I think I can appreciate the book more having seen it on screen. I think I will enjoy reading ahead when I finally get there especially as the TV show may not make it all the way to the end before being cancelled. The only problem I have is sometimes not being able to match a name in the book to a actor's face, so when I see a name I recognize but will take me a while to put a face to the name when really I shouldn't need to be doing that.

I just hope GRRM doesn't die before finishing the books, he is pretty old!

its a few days walk?

4.1 days at 5km/h... provided you walk 24 hrs a day in a straight line on perfectly level ground with no stopping, and no obstacles or rough terrain to traverse.*

*Not like the lands North of The Wall. :p

I also found it very useful as well. I read the voices of the characters in the series aloud in my head when I'm reading the book. Unless its a nobody in which case I have generic male/female voice 1 and 2 :p

I'm going to get the second book once I've finished the first and hopefully that'll keep me happy until the next series :)
