3D is overrated

Seriously, what kind of vested interest do you have in 3D? You've got a massive boner for it, way beyond what I'd expect from someone in the "pro-3D" camp.
He probably spent £2,000 on one of the first sets and is desperate to justify his purchase.

Anyway, I'm not a fan. The polarised glasses are rubbish; as someone else said, it was like watching Avengers with sunglasses on.

please describe those crowbarred in 3D shots in Avatar....

Avatar doesn't crowbar any cheap 3D effects into the film.... and neither did Pirates 4,really.

Arrow in the wheel of vehicle coming into shot just after the shuttle lands, dirt being thrown in your face as Scully first runs, arrows being pointed out of the screen at you etc etc... you wont agree and that's fine, it's all opinion.

Also, please provide proof of this policy of holding back 2D versions...

Google Prometheus 2d release.

what you call holding back is a reaction to the market, the paying public. The public prefers 3D,if it didn't there'd be more 2D screenings.

3d midnight opening night when I was there was 40% ish (yes, that's a guess as I didn't take a head count) full only, last midnight screening I went to of a 2d movie was sold out weeks before release. Holding back is holding back, whatever the reason some people such as myself opted to see the 3d version instead of the 2d due to it, thus adjusted figures. FACT. 3d tickets were on sale for Prometheus as of the 27th April this year, 2d tickets did not come on sale until the week before, that's not a reaction to the market, it's manipulation just the same as the reason why shops place their focus products next to the queuing systems of their checkouts.

It's sad how you cannot understand that some (and let us face facts, it is not a minority is it?) people genuinely prefer a 2d showing and have to express your stance by name calling and trolling.

and this poll is obviously representative of the state of 3D as a whole... ;)

3D is the future of cinema/home cinema. FACT

The numbers speak for themselves. FACT

3D movies have grossed over $11.000.000.000 at the BO so far,DVD and Blu Ray sales excluded.
China is adding 2000 new 3D screen within 2 years....

3D is here to stay... if you don't like it,watch 2D.No one stops you from enjoying it.

Similar results to ours, really.

I discovered something a bit odd yesterday.

It appears that not only is my local multiplex only showing Promethious about half as many times in 2d as 3d, but it is also having about a third of them as hoh hearing subs (something I didn't spot when booking my tickets).
It was still more full than when I saw Thor and Avengers in 3d:p

Cinemas are under pressure to push 3D. I think it was pirates 4 where there were something like twice as many 3D showings as 2D. Amusingly enough, demand for 2D showings was about twice as high as for 3D but NEVER MIND ALL THAT EVERYONE LOVES 3D AND IT IS THE FUTURE.

Just to poke holes in your "facts"

Avatar grossed $2,782bill of which $760mill was 3d
Avengers $1,396bill of which $596mill was 3d
Transformers Darkside $1,132bill of which $352mill was 3d
Toy Story 3 $1,063bill of which $415mill was 3d
Harry Potter Deathly Hallows $1,328bill of which $381mill 3d

I can continue if you want but why bother? 3d is not even contributing 50% of a films gross yet it is here to stay and is oh so great? We are getting 3d shoved down our throats and it still can't break 50% gross? Lol at you and your 3d love good sir!

Of course there is going to be more 2D tickets sold, because the fact is that there are less cinemas equipped for 3D than 2D worldwide.

I worked on on two of those above films and there was never any pretence that the 3D was going to sell more than the 2D ticket sales. However, it still makes a pretty healthy profit from the 3D compared to the cost required to do a Conversion or Shoot in 3D, that's what matters.

Also there are 2D screenings out there, sure there might not be as many in UK multiplexes, but they are still there.

I'm still not buying this rubbish about Prometheus either... so what if the midnight screenings were only in 3D... that's a small fraction of the opening box office. As I said before, my local Odeon has it on 3 times a day in 2D since it opened. If you really don't want to see 3D, go to a 2D performance. Ultimately if everyone hated it as much as people make out, then they would vote with their feet and either see it in 2D, wait for the home video release, or not at all. This currently doesn't appear to be the case.

They are all from the top 5 grossing 3d movies ever (I think toy story might just be outside of it) so if the best ever can't make a scratch on 2d sales it doesn't say much, IMO of course.

I don't understand how you can't see why though?

If every cinema showing it worldwide was 3D equipped, then the figures would reflect what people really thought about 3D somewhat better. That isn't the case though.

But if 3D adds so much more to the viewing experience surely people would make the effort to go see it?

I know of only 1 cinema in my area which doesn't do 3d, it's there for every bid release if people want it.

Because they can't!

While many of our multiplexes are 3D equipped, this isn't the case for the whole world. Do you see?

I can't stand 3d, it just loses detail overall.

When there is this much negativity regarding it, it will never ever take over.

I think the whole thing will vapour out completely in a year or two when the fad is over.

Still a bucket load of money though.

Love watching things in 3D adds so much more depth to it, prefer to watch nature programs over films as this is where it shows it off best for me.

I had my first 3d headache after seeing prometheus, never had that before. 3d is **** - its useless , adds zero to the experience and the price hike is just the studios trying to get their grubby mitts on our cash.

I have a 3d tv but never use it for 3d. I cant see it being around for too long.

:D

so up to 50% additional gross is not worth mentioning?

your figures prove that 3D is commercially viable.Thank you!

Nope, didn't spend a single solitary penny on a 3D Tv.I'd be happy to splash out for it though.
