3D is overrated

The current 3d will die, and then be replaced by glasses free 3d, might take a while but it will happen.

it wont die though, it doesn't need to be filmed differently. its just a different way to display it. So allthough i agree it will change to that in the home, you cant make a cinema sized screen, well not cost effective. Its not going to die.

Which makes me wonder what will happen to cinema. TVs are massive and cheap, surround sound if you wish is great and relatively cheap, then if 3d works better at home. Then releases are much faster these days to Internet/DVD than they use to be. And of course the cost.

With 3D tickets costing a bit more, do you really blame them for having the first showings in 3D... especially the midnight showings, which lets face it are pretty specialised and only going to be attended by die hard fans. Not to mention it's the way Scott intended the film to be shown. I'd have done the same if it was me.

If it's really that much of an issue, you either find a 2D showing, or wait. Prometheus only came out last weekend and it's being shown in 2D three times a day at my local Odeon all week.

Irrellevant to my point.

By that measure 3d never really died at all, it has always been 90% about the way it gets displayed as to film it you have always needed 2 viewpoints or to edit it in later.

It died because it didn't come main stream. So no it's not the same.
It is only going to make inroads and keep increasing in popularity. It's not going to be like the old inpterration, where it exploded for one or two films then fell out of main stream use.

And you know this how?

you want to bet money?

What has it done? What TVs don't come with 3d? what isn't filmed in 3d? what technology is nearing market readiness?

I just can't get my head round people who think it's going to die and that's a completely separate idea to if you like 3d or not(one is not linked to the other)

3d isn't going anywhere, just like Hd it's going to get more and more popular. You just have to look at what's happened, what is happening and look at the trend and future technology.

I'd like to see a poll on 2d versus 3d viewing preferences now, whenever I go to the cinema all of my normal cinema buddies would prefer to watch in 2d, not a single one of them would rather see a film in 3d and I'd be interested to see what sort of split the forum population has.

Prove me wrong right now, in this moment in time.

It just happens that 3D is built into TV sets this time round for the consumer. That doesn't mean that it's popular or going to get to that point for that matter, it just means that people buying new sets also have to buy into 3D if they like it or not. It doesn't mean that they'll use it.

Going by CES 2012, the future is all about higher resolutions / OLED and other stuff. 3D was hardly mentioned at the show, care to explain why?

It's not mentioned anymore because to add 3D to a TV set is basically just some firmware changes and not much else. The technology is done and dusted now. So why would it be mentioned year after year after year at CES and the like? It wouldn't.

The problem 3D TV sets have is not that people don't want them. It's that there's so few movies that warrant having one and/or being arsed to put on the 3D specs. As the years go by and more and more epic films come out in 3D then gradually the adoption will increase.

To illustrate the problem there is only really two films I would watch in 3D today, in my own home, and that is Avatar and Prometheus. Nothing else warrants the additional tiny bit of hassle.

FOr around a year now all the films I've watched have been 3D. But yesterday I finally got around to watching Avengers and the only place near me screening it had it in 2D. I have to say that I enjoyed it so much more for not having to wear glasses and not having a slight loss of colour.

Given a choice in the future I htink I'll keep watching 2D from now on.

Anyone else agree that 2D is better than 3D?

Agree.

3D is still in gimmicky phase and only watch things in 2D.

We did a poll just recently and it was pretty damning - 5:1 in favour of 2D.
Out in the wider world, I think the numbers are more like 3 or 4 to 1 preferring 2D to 3D.

After watching the Prometheus in 3D and comparing it to the trailers which included fast action 3D action, I have to say that 3D works best with slow moving shots, if it's fast, then it starts to blur and takes away the viewing experience.

But slow action shots, like clouds, smoke, rain in 3D look stunning and add to the experience, this is where 3D works best and I like it to stay.

3D is here to stay but it's going to be replaced with Augmented Reality at some point in my age I dare to say, so am sure in the next years when that becomes main mainstream, everyone here be debating about that as well.

I also dislike 3D and hate it when they add in unnecessary scenes just to showcase it...

Might have been mentioned before but I also think its to help combat piracy? Since you can't record it without it being blurry, however I know most places play both 2D and 3D so it seems fairly pointless o.0

On the whole I agree with the OP, although on seeing Prometheus in 3D I was completely in awe of the ' 3D map room' scene, that was truly spectacular and it was the 3D effect that made it so.
