what would be the best class to go with for a complete newcomer to diablo games?
i started a barbarian as i enjoy melee combat but ive read theyre not very good and require crazy gear to progress with.
is that true?

Play whatever appeals to you, obviously the Barbarian does so keep playing it. Blizzard are working on balancing classes all the time and Barbarians are getting more and more popular because of how much damage they can take. Each class has it's own merits though and the good thing about Diablo is how accessible it is for newcomers. I have a level 60 Wizard and my second characters a Barbarian which i'm definitely enjoying.

Probably because you can't, as you need to be level 60

I've had mine which isnt quite as good but is still perfectly itemized up for £75 bid / £100 BO and nothing.

yeah, i finished hell last night, i hit 60 towards the end of act 2. you start getting the NV buff at 60 though which is always nice.

every class is gear dependent I guess? i finished hell last night and haven't bought anything off the AH (or RMAH) everything was dropped in game or I bought a couple of things from the in game vendors.
inferno will be interesting though, my limited forays into it illustrate a severe lack of dps (in hell I couldn't kill a treasure goblin before it ported out
). i should say i'm a monk, also top fun as class.

I found it from a champ pack just before Azmodan, it actually dropped from one of the sub minions not the main guy. Would have had 4-5 stacks of NV by that time, I also have about 70% MF on my gear at the moment, trying to get that a little higher.
Got lucky with the find tbh, i've only had 3-4 legendaries so far the whole time i've played, and this is the only one of those that was any good. Normally I just find absolute junk so made a change to get something decent for once.
