Hi chaps I am expecting new new graphics card today.

In the past whenever I have had a new card it has been with a clean install of windows.

So, I am currently running windows 7 with an ageing 8600GT and going to be installing a MSI HD 7850.

What do I need to do to makes sure it is done correctly?

Just uninstall the Nvidia drivers, reboot. Turn off PC. Remove Nvidia card. Install ATi card. Switch on. Install ATi drivers. And Robert's your father's brother :)

Okay so

  1. uninstall nvidia drivers
  2. let windows install legacy drivers for nvidia card
  3. reboot
  4. turn off and install new card
  5. Install ATI drivers

In that order?

Should I use the MSI disc first then get the lastest card drivers online?

Doubt it, latest Afterburner will probably be needed anyway if your going to oc the 7850(which it's crying out for).

Have fun.:)

Didn't have a problem at all going from my 9800GTX+ to 5850 with just uninstalling the Nvidia driver in Win 7 before shutting down the PC, replace the card and boot into windows and install AMD drivers.

But fpr updating AMD drivers on the other hand...it can mess things up even with uninstalling their own old driver and then installing a new one...which is why I now only install new over old for AMD driver thesedays.

Nah It was a 2 stage upgrade, I have a quad core and 8 gigs of ram now :)

It seems to be staying rather loud since I stopped playing about 15 minutes ago...
If you are not in i5/i7 but still on Core2, then in some games that use less than 4 cores would still bottleneck your 7850. My old Q6600 at 3.6GHz would bottleneck even my 5850, that card is quite a bit slower than the 7850.

I'm using a X4 II 955 phenom. I'm not fussed if there is a bottleneck as it is much better than what I had before. :)

It is a little too noisy for my liking though.
If your 955BE is at stock speed, you best overclock it (if you got an ok CPU cooler)...and that's essentially unlock more performance from the 7850 :)

Although coming from a 8600GT you already got a huge jump in performance, but since you got the 7850 already, might as well try to make the most of it, to get your money's worth :D
