Job center woes.

I assume you've looked for jobs in bike shops?

I rang Edinburgh bicycle coop and asked if there was any jobs, they said yes send an email, so I did in reply but heard nothing back. I'm going to go to Evans tomorrow on Deansgate and the Manchester Velodrome and ask, I would really like a job in a bike shop.

Most LBS style shops are old school so best thing is to pop in and see if they need casual work ;)

Obviously the bigger chains are a bit more official.

Every time I was in the dole office having an interview (this was two years ago now) I wanted so badly to ask if I could just have their job, seeing as though they were immensely awful at it themselves.

I was unemployed for quite a while after I voluntarily stopped my JSA, the office I went to was just disgusting - the arm pit of Derbyshire. It was quite literally the stereotypical cretin filled hell hole we all imagine.

Set up my own limited company and haven't looked back. The JSA did send me on a two week fork lift truck driving course though, that was great fun. Never got any work out of it though as there was the usual catch 22 - "Applicant must have 2 years experience".

just take any unskilled job you can get, then look for something else while you work there, you can't be picking and choosing when claiming JSA, that's not what it's there for.

besides that they never helped me get a job, i had to go looking myself and go to the job centre every 2 weeks with a diary of what i've applied to for them to sign, you'll be lucky if they find you anything.

Well, yes you can. When I was on JSA I made it clear I was a digital designer. Every week I went there they said "Here's a job for a programmer in XYZ for £40,000 a year". I had to explain every single week that I do not know certain specific languages and that it'd be useless applying for them. But still, they got in a tantrum if I didn't.

Edit: Just saw you said unskilled... I'd say I'd be as bad at learning painting and decorating as I am at programming in a language I do not know. :P

I'm debating whether to sign on or not while i look for a 'proper' job. Problem is i don't want to accidently end up in a near enough full time supermarket/bar/fastfood/etc job because i just know i'd have no where near enough time to spend on my art and it would probably take 2 years to get up to job standard instead of a couple of months. On the other hand 50 quid a week would be nice. Dunno.

It is not just job center it is just getting a job in general. It sucks!! I hate recruitment agencies they want to know you whole life story. when i had no job for 3 months I must have told my life story over 10 times and then they just say, after you spent 15 mins explaining your life story and answering a million questions, ok just send me your CV and ill see what i can do. Why not just shut up and take my cv from the start and not waste my time. moaning again... But i think a big part of convincing the annoying recruitment agency is attitude. if you just pretend to be a happy person and full of enthusiasm that helps, well that is what i do.

It's going to get worse and worse people.

Computers, machines, automation eliminating work.
Ever growing population
The rise of competition in the far east.

I think I'd have to go self employed with something if I ever left my job. It's an employers market. I heard the other day someone I know was on their fourth interview to work in a basic job at Vodafone !!.

OP, what was your job before this? Did you have a job before this or were you studying?

I had a really easy time while on JSA, I think they were intimidated by my intellect.

I'm going to apply at Asda in trafford, my only concern is its 20 hours, at minimum wage this is £121 and 60 pence per week, after tax/ni would I be able to afford to rent a place off of that?

You dont need to pay ni/tax on that wage :-) but believe me when i say even asda tesco etc jobs are HARD to get in this climate :-)

You won't pay any Tax & NI on that amount. That said it's hardly enough to be be able to rent a place and live on

Apply for Working tax credit ?

Over 25 and you need to work more than 30hrs a week for WTC. It's a problem of part-time work.

Having enjoyed the pleasure of signing on a few years ago I can empathise. However, I wouldnt be too hard on the advisors. They are faced primarily with people who simply have no desire to work or contribute to society full stop. The only way this will ever change is if benefits are abolished altogether.
As a tip, something that worked in my favour when jobseeking was that I always turned up with two weeks worth of well documented records of my attempts to find work. e.g Copies of all letters/ sent and emailed, and applications completed. Going a bit OTT will set you apart from the dole scroungers and may win some favour with the advisor.

I was unemployed for 3 weeks 4 years ago and I HAD to get jsa for our mortgage protection to cover it.

1st week some guy was being spoken to by an advisor and they were saying it had been a year he had been going and they were going to have to move him on to some scheme.

2nd week I went in and he was behind the desk advising me on how to get a job.

I know they also did this with a friends daughter who had been unemployed for 9 months.

Some of the staff just really haven't got a clue. But look at it from their side, you're stuck in an office dealing where maybe 70% of the people you deal with aren't interested and don't give a damn about working. Even if you were capable and cared, dealing with that for 40 hours a week would wear you down!

As soon as I said I had an IT degree, that's all they wanted to throw at me never mind how many times I told them I'm not a programmer.
