Road Cycling Essentials

Had the book for a little while now but not read it. Toying with the idea of entering La Marmotte next year and building a set of light weight climbing wheels for it.

ultralight wheels may not be the best place to start your building career. i'd grab a tiagra hub, an open sport and some basic spokes to mess around with first :D

I don't doubt that for a moment!

My only problem is that if I built a cheapie I'd find it difficult to put it on the bike! I'll probably build some more 32/32 Open Pros on Hopes as a test bed first. Tbh I doubt I'll ever get round to it....

Evening all. I had an involuntary dismount this morning after managing to get my front wheel neatly stuck in a drain cover's slots... Which was embarrassing. Mild road rash only on me, but I've damaged my 10 speed shimano 105 STI shifter. The brake is still fine, but I can't change gear. I know they're not user serviceable, but how hard are they to replace? Looks like £80 from CRC...

In the meantime, I've adjusted the rear derailleur to give me a middlish gear, which means I'm riding a two speed bike over the weekend :)

Give the cable a tug first just to make sure you havnt just snapped/dislodged it. That could be a cheap and easy fix for you if it is.

Both the inner and the outer lever get stuck in when pushed across. There seems to be a lot of lateral play in the lever too (in both directions). I've previously (few years ago) jammed the other STI shifter (for the front mech), and the LBS said there was no way they'd try to repair one (I don't think shimano sell spares anyway).

What do you mean by a tug, touch?

y'know this wheelset weighs just over 1600g with about £200 in parts gone into it. It'd be 50g lighter and about a tenner cheaper if i'd gone for black open pros instead of hard anodised. So 1560g, and 200 quid? makes this and this seem rather pricey, before you even get into spoke replacement costs!

I thought maybe if you had bashed the shifter lever hard, the force moving it might have snapped the cable or the impact might have popped the anchor out of it's holder.

I though that if you pull the cable at the top tube (or wherever it is exposed) it might come right out. But if the shifter gets jammed when you try to change gear, i dont think it's a snapped cable anymore.

I'm going to have pick up that wheel building book, I'm a cycling cheapskate that likes building things. :D

Does anyone know of any decent short sleeve jerseys about at the moment, I need another. Preferably something nice looking?

Other than Rapha, Torm, or Castelli that people have already mentioned, I really like these Sportful Pro Fit jerseys. They have matching bibs, socks and gloves. AWESOME! :)

This is what the red/white version looks like on.

I'd go straight to Torm.cc. Excellent jerseys and sport wool is the dogs danglies.

Torm jerseys are nice, but I really don't like that gay white band they were forced to put across the rear pockets to differentiate them from the other well known sports wool jersey manufacturer...

It does depend which wheels you're building. Many plain retro-looking rims are cheaper to buy pre-made, but obviously you don't get your own choice of hub, spoke and rim. That said, I've not seen retro-looking rims that are £360 and up. Had I put higher-end track hubs in my Velo Orange rims they still would have clicked in at well under £200. I think mine were £120 in total.

Yeah, my fault - I should have given some more details. Thanks for your suggestions though! Do you think putting a new shifter on is a job for me at home, or a LBS job? The shimano PDF doesn't seem that complicated but doesn't appear to have all the necessary steps... I'm not sure if the shifter comes with replacement cables or if I can reuse the existing ones. I'm leaning towards LBS, but I might ring them up before I drop it in for them to order the part as I suspect most won't stock it.
