***The Official Samsung Galaxy S III Thread***

Smart stay doesn't work very well for me. I have glasses, I've tried without and the result seems to be the same. I would be looking at the screen and suddenly an eye pops up and the screen dims and goes off :( I was really looking forward to this feature!

Just got my S3 from Tmobile a few days ago, and noticed i dont have a software update button in the "about phone" section where is the software update button i cant find is it in another section or is my phone messed up...?

Sorry double post

Not sure if it helps but I've seen complaints elsewhere that Orange handsets have the same problem. Aren't T-Mobile & Orange connected somehow ?

The people reporting it with Orange handsets have tried to get a phone without Orange firmware and have had no luck.

Orange and T-Mobile are part of Everything Everywhere. I guess they will eventually change their separate names later.

It is not all T-Mob/Orange phones though as my T-Mob is fine. Unlocked/Unbranded "vanilla" S3 :)

I'd be all over AOKP if it weren't for the lack of camera features I have to say, I read there is slight shutter lag compared to Samsung's camera app and that obviously there are no effects modes like on Samsung's one either. Such a good camera deserves matching an application to match!

So if you install an AOKP ROM, can't you just install that HX-Camera mod afterwards?
I'm just downloading the Omega AOKP ROM now and going to give it ago purely out of boredom. :p

All smartphones can now :p

Well for some anyway :o :p

Works superbly on my 1S, but it is kind of pointless as it is useless in dark conditions (when lying in bed with the lights off), which is when I would use it the most.

It will be interesting to see if google provide this feature with jellybean.

Hmm, judging from the reviews, this app doesn't sound that great... I think I will stick with Samsung's version for now thanks Nexus :p

If Samsung just adds motion sensor to the stay function to detect the position of the phone (i.e. when people hold it upright or in landscape) relative to the face/head then it would be nigh perfect.

It won't just track to see your face and eyes. But the position of your phone upright relative to your face (i.e. placed in front of it at a roughish 40-90 degree angle) will also be monitored. For low light, it will see that there is darkness and will simply just monitor the positioning of the phone and keep the screen on for that.

For the odd positions - well, I would love a toggle for the screen to be always on on stock touchwiz but I doubt that will happen so a ROM will definitely be needed.

That really sucks Frenzy. I wear glasses too and although smart stay isn't 100% for me, it does work most of the time. What I find is quite good to do is if the smart stay doesn't work the the first time the screen dims slightly, so when the second time around, just acknowledge the flashing eye icon by glancing at it.

I've set screen time out to 15 seconds.

So at the 6 second mark, the eye flashes up. If it doesn't detect me, the screen dims slightly.

At the 13 second mark, the eye does its second flash up. If the screen dimmed the first time, I make sure to look at the eye icon when it flashes up (just a glance up to the top of the notification bar).

That usually brightens up the screen again and we're back to normal.

I'm asian so I'm even more surprised that it works this well for me. Especially after that Youtube video about Samsung's idea for 'blink to unlock'. Heh.

Samsung apps require Samsung ROMs to work!

Haha yeah I thought the same to when I read the reviews but then read that it worked great for the X/XL on XDA, so thought it would be the same for the S too and turns out it is.

It isn't really meant for the GS 3 though since it already has this feature built in :p

One thing, which that app does have over Samsung's way though, is that you can change how often the smart stay checks for your face/eyes and other time stuff (although have to buy the pro version), I don't think you can do this with the GS 3 smart stay feature?

There is also a good app similar to smart stay but uses the sensor of your phone in order to know when to turn the screen off and on automatically (similar to what you said there) i.e. turns the screen on when picked up and held upright and turns the screen off when placed flat down on a table etc. can't remember the name of it though :o Will try to find it out.

Why not just use a 3rd party app for keeping the screen on constantly via one click like switch pro or something?

EDIT:

Found that app

It's a shame all Samsung apps require the touchwiz frame to work. But losing these features have not stopped my flashing APOK Rom onto my S3. Now my S3 is exactly like the nexus I replaced...hmmm.

Someone said the home button felt really cheap like on the Galaxy S2, but I thought it was okay, not quite as refined as the one on the iPhone, but fine in general.

I never understand this criticism. What could be done better to make it more refined? It does not rattle around, has a good resistance/actuation force, a solid non-cheap 'thud' sound when pressed and is not bad to the touch.

What COULD make it better?

With the Galaxy S 2 button? I don't think it's particularly bad, but it wobbles a bit and doesn't feel even.

Compare it to the button an iPhone 4/4S and there's a clear difference in quality in my opinion.

Gotta say that I'm thoroughly impressed by the audio output on this phone, only recently started using it for music and my sound around incredible..

Also loving PowerAmp!, the way it resumes playback and launches the app when you plug headphones back in is

That track has tight bass, in a good way!

Orange found the time to lock and add their crappy boot anim to mine
Do you have the software update button under 'about device'? My wife's just got one via Orange and it's missing. Not happy! How will Kies get an Orange update?

Kies pushes it over USB, the update button under device is only for over-the-air updating (which it appears, is probably disabled).

A quick search has shown that you can flash to a stock ROM using ODIN3 - is this easier than arguing with Orange? Can you revert back to the Orange ROM if necessary? This seems to not require root, just Kies installed and the correct ROM...
